Brandon Matthews Ends Temple Golf Career with Fifth Place Finish at The American Championship

5.3.16 | Men's Golf

LECANTO, Fla. - Temple senior Brandon Matthews carded a two-under 70 for his final round of his collegiate career to place fifth with a three-under  213 at the American Athletic Conference Championship Tuesday.  As a team, Temple placed eighth of the nine teams competing at the par-72, 7,025-yard Quarry Course at Black Diamond Ranch.

"In my opinion he is the best player in Temple history," said Temple coach Brian Quinn." His future in golf is going to be long and hopefully prosperous. He is an incredible talent and it has been a privilege to watch him play golf and improve as a player."

Matthews recorded seven birdies during his final 18 holes, but had three bogies and one double bogey that prevented him from catching the individual champion, USF's Aksel Olsen, who carded a seven-under 209 for the tournament.

Sophomore Mark Farley placed second for the Owls, and 26th overall with a nine-over 225.  Freshman Gary McCabe was next, shooting a 16-over 232 to tie for 36th overall.  Redshirt freshman John Barone had his best round of the tournament with one-over 73 to move into a tie for 40th (234) while freshman Trey Wren (239/t43rd) rounded out the Owls' quintet.

"I am really encouraged with our freshmen," Quinn added.  "In a year or so we will be pretty strong."

USF won the championship with a three-day total of 845.  Memphis was second, 20 strokes back with an 865.  Houston (871) was next followed by East Carolina (873), UCF (876), Cincinnati (891), UConn (896), Temple (901) and Tulsa (924).
