Temple Named BIG EAST Lacrosse Co-Coaching Staff of the Year; Six Owls Earn All-BIG EAST Honors

5.4.16 | Women's Lacrosse

NEW YORK - Temple lacrosse earned All-BIG EAST honors in record numbers when the league office announced the awards on Wednesday morning, while Head Coach Bonnie Rosen and her assistants were named the Co-Coaching Staff of the Year in the conference.

Temple and Florida shared Coaching Staff of the Year honors in a vote by the league's eight head coaches. After being picked to finish sixth in the league this season, the Owls tied for third and earned the third seed at the BIG EAST Tournament by virtue of tiebreakers. Temple's 12 wins this season are its most in eight years, since the 2008 squad went 13-7 and won the Atlantic 10 Championship. Rosen's most recent Coach of the Year honor prior to this season was also earned in 2008 from the A-10. Temple's win on April 23 against Cincinnati marked the 150th career victory for Rosen. She has now compiled 83 wins over 10 seasons at Temple, and had won 68 games in her 10 seasons at the University of Connecticut.

Six Owls earned All-BIG EAST honors, marking a record number for the program in conference play. Over 15 seasons in the Atlantic 10 and now three in the BIG EAST, Temple had only ever earned as many as five all-conference honors (five times).

Junior midfielder Morgan Glassford and senior attacker Brenda McDermott were named to the BIG EAST First Team. The all-conference honor is a career first for both players. Temple had four selections to the BIG EAST Second Team in senior defender Summer Jaros, senior goalkeeper Jaqi Kakalecik, senior attacker Rachel Schwaab and senior midfielder Nicole Tiernan.

Glassford has had an outstanding junior season for the Owls, leading the team and the conference with 69 draw controls which also ranks first all-time in a single season at Temple. Her 4.06 draw controls per game rank 22nd in the nation, and she has twice been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this season. Glassford has scored 20 goals to rank fifth on the team while also recording four assists, 19 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers.

McDermott truly appeared on the scene for the first time this season, and has done so in dramatic fashion. After playing in just a total of seven games due to injuries over the last two years, McDermott has started in 15 games as a senior. Her 20 assists lead the team, while her 25 goals are tied for second. She was named the BIG EAST Attacker of the Week on April 25 after totaling a league-best 11 total points in two crucial wins for the Owls against Villanova and Cincinnati.

Jaros has started in nearly every game for the last three years after moving into a defensive role as a sophomore. This season, she has taken every draw control for the Owls and come up with 24 of those herself to rank third on the team. Her 21 ground balls also rank third, while her 12 caused turnovers are tied for fourth. Jaros is an anchor for a defense that has allowed just 6.53 goals per game to rank fifth in the nation, and she is frequently tasked with marking the opponents' top scorer.

Already decorated with three BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors this season, Kakalecik now adds BIG EAST Second Team to the list. She has played every minute in the cage for the Owls, allowing just 6.50 goals per game to rank fifth among all players in NCAA Division I. Her .500 save percentage ranks 15th nationally, and she has stopped 307 shots in her career to tie for ninth all-time in program history.

Schwaab leads the Owls with 31 goals in 2016, while adding 16 assists for a team-best 47 total points. She has scored multiple goals in 10 games including three hat tricks, and scored four goals in back-to-back wins against UMBC and Rutgers in early March. Her 2.76 points per game rank fifth in the BIG EAST, while her 1.82 goals per game tie for eighth in the league.

The BIG EAST honor is the second in a row for Tiernan, who earned all-conference first team honors a year ago. She has scored 18 goals this season and leads the team in both ground balls (26) and caused turnovers (18). While not putting up as big numbers offensively as she did last year, Tiernan has still been a consistent force, scoring in 14 of 17 games for the Owls including a hat trick at Marquette on April 16.

Temple is the third seed in the BIG EAST Championships, which begin Thursday in Washington, D.C. The Owls will face second-seeded UConn at 7 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
