WASHINGTON, D.C. - With a 5-0 run to start the second half, top-seeded and No. 2 Florida pulled away from Temple lacrosse and never looked back, defeating the Owls 16-4 in the BIG EAST Championship game on Saturday afternoon at Georgetown. Temple's season concludes at 13-6 overall, while the 18-1 Gators move on to the NCAA Tournament.
Seniors Kirstie Connor and Megan Tiernan along with junior Morgan Glassford were all named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team for Temple. Connor scored five goals in the Owls' 12-8 win against UConn in the semifinals. Tiernan and Glassford both finished the tournament with three goals apiece, scoring one in the title game. Glassford picked up four draw controls against UConn and an even more impressive five draws in the championship game against Florida.
"Seeing the season come to an end so abruptly is the hardest thing about a day like today," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen. "We certainly would have liked a chance to win the game at the end so that was really hard. But what we've accomplished this year with this team is tremendous, and they've been so much fun to coach. They've performed so highly for so much of the season. There's nothing to hang our heads about today. Florida is an outstanding team, and I'm glad we had to go through them today to try to win a championship. Its been a little while since we had gotten ourselves to a championship game and I'm really thankful for that experience. I know it'll go a long way to laying the foundation and inspiring our future teams."
The Owls kept the game close early and trailed just 4-2 at halftime, but Florida opened up a seven-goal lead less than eight minutes into the second half. The Gators would go on to outscore Temple 12-2 in the latter period, with All-Tournament Team goalkeeper Haley Hicklen making four saves for the Gators.
In addition to Tiernan and Glassford's goals, the Owls got one apiece from Brenda McDermott and Nicole Tiernan. Summer Jaros led all players with three caused turnovers while also recording two draw controls.Â
