Volleyball Team Earns AVCA National Academic Recognition
7.26.16 | Women's Volleyball
PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team was honored with a national academic accolade on Monday, being named an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award winner.Â
The award, which was initiated during the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.50 cumulative team grade point average.
A record number of teams earned the award this year, with 764 institutions ranging from high school to NCAA Division I. The previous high, 757, was set in the 2014-15 academic year. Among the award winners, Temple was one of just 20 Division I teams to earn the team academic award AND meet their Dig Pink Fundraising goal.Â
Â
The AVCA award began in 1992-93 and is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the award has been given out over 1,000 schools have earned the distinction and 7,642 awards have been given out in total.
The Owls open the 2016 season by hosting their own Temple Invitational. The Cherry and White will welcome Northern Arizona and Hampton for a three-team event August 26 and 27.Â
