Thompson Named to John Mackey Award Watch List
7.5.16 | Football
PHILADELPHIA - – The Friends of John Mackey have released the 2016 John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List, given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. Temple redshirt senior, Colin Thompson, is among 45 student-athletes on the initial preseason Watch List. He is joined by just two others from the American Athletic Conference (Cincinnati's D.J. Dowdy and USF's Elkanah Dillon).
Thompson is entering his third season with Temple. The Doylestown, Pa. native was originally recruited by Florida and spent two seasons hampered by foot injuries with the Gators following a stellar career at Archbishop Wood High. He transferred to Temple and has played in 23 straight games for the Owls, including 13 starts, since making his debut in the fourth game of the 2014 season. A devastating blocker who helped running back Jahad Thomas to over 1,200 rushing yards a season ago, Thompson has also averaged over 10-yard per catch on 16 career receptions.
NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA.
The award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2016 Mackey Award recipient will be announced on December 7, 2016 and then presented live on December 8, 2016 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU. All future announcements can be found at www.johnmackeyaward.com.
The John Mackey Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. The 22 awards boast over 722 years of tradition-selection excellence. Visit www.NCFAA.org to learn more about our story.
