Men's Soccer Takes Down Lafayette 1-0 in Preseason Exhibition Match

PHILADELPHIA – With the Owls' season opener just 11 days away, Temple Men's Soccer held its first preseason exhibition game Monday afternoon against the Lafayette Leopards. The Owls took the match 1-0 with a lone goal from newcomer Zach Brown.
Today's exhibition match was the first contest to be held at the brand new Temple Athletics Sports Complex.
"To play down here in the city and on main campus was a great feeling," said head coach David MacWilliams. "I know we're all looking forward to playing more games down here and building a strong fan base with the student body, the alumni and families."
The first half produced only four total shots from both teams. Key returner Jorge Gomez Sanchez fired all three shots for the Owls before halftime, forcing Leopard's goalkeeper Brian Ehrlich to make two strong saves.
After opening up the second half with many new players, the Owls were able to break through to find a goal in the 78th minute. Senior captain Matt Mahoney served a ball in from the right side of the box to find freshman Zach Brown who capitalized on a straight forward straight to the back of the net.
The Owls' strong defense held the Leopards to a single shot across the 90 minutes. Returning goalkeeper Alex Cagle logged the save before Robin Goetz controlled the net in the second half.
Utilizing more than half of his bench throughout the match, coach MacWilliams noted, "Everyone played up to their expectations. I think all the guys handled the day pretty well. I was quite pleased and thought everyone made a contribution today. Some bright futures are ahead for some of these guys, for sure."
The Owls' next preseason exhibition will be on Saturday, August 20 at Monmouth University. Official game play will open up at home against Manhattan on August 26 at 4:00 p.m.
