Women’s Soccer Defeats Rider 1-0 in an Overtime Thriller on the Road
9.1.16 | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's soccer picked up its second win of the season in an overtime thriller against the Rider Broncs on Thursday night. Both teams are now 2-2 on the season.
The game-winning goal came during the 92nd minute of play as junior Gabriella McKeown picked up the loose ball 20 yards out and netted one in the bottom right corner past Rider goalkeeper Bethany-May Howard.
McKeown was thrilled to have the game winner but the win means more to her.
"It is always a great feeling [to get game-winning goal]," McKeown said. "I was just so happy for the win."
McKeown's score marked her team-leading third goal of the season.
Head coach Seamus O'Connor expects big scores from McKeown and credits her for her hard work.
"She's a tremendous athlete and works so hard," O'Connor said. "She knows that her job is to take those big shots and she hit that one beautifully today."
As the rain poured down in the first half, the Owls outshot the Broncs 8-6, but neither team could sneak one through.
Coming out of the half, the game went into a lightening delay for about 30 minutes. Once it was determined safe to resume play, Temple continued its shooting onslaught, outshooting the Broncs again in the second half 9-3. As a team, the Owls finished with a season high 18 shots.
Despite the delay, Temple was ready to come out and play hard.
"We were fired up and ready to go," McKeown said. "We were done with the delay and wanted to win."
At the end of 90 minutes of play, the game was still scoreless – forcing overtime.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Nash finished the day with three saves and her second shutout of the season.
O'Connor was more than pleased with his team's effort tonight.
"I thought the girls were excellent tonight," O'Connor said. "They answered every question I had of them yesterday. They went and took that game today. I was really impressed."
The Owls will play at home Sunday against Towson after three consecutive games on the road. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Temple Sports Complex and will be broadcast on OwlsTV.
