Field Hockey Falls 3-1 to City Rival Drexel
9.11.16 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - In a very evenly-matched contest overall, it was ultimately the Drexel Dragons who were able to convert on a couple extra opportunities to defeat Temple field hockey, 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Howarth Field. The Owls (1-5) matched Drexel (2-3) in total shots and shots on goal, but the Dragons made the most of their penalty corners.
The corner opportunities were just 10-9 in favor of the Dragons, but they scored all three of their goals on corner plays.Â
"There's a lot of things that need to be in play for a successful corner to happen," said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. "From the insert to the stick stop to the timing of the strike and the options. Drexel did a good job in reading our attack. I think it just comes down to us being able to execute a bit more under pressure."
Temple applied heavy offensive pressure for much of the first half, and led 6-2 in shots over the first 20 minutes of play. The Dragons' first three corners failed to yield a goal, but on the fourth corner in the 25th minute, Jessica McCarthy scored on the insert pass from Idrienne Walker.
Less than six minutes later, Temple tied the game when junior Hattie Kuhns collected her own rebounded shot and save and slipped it past the Dragons' Erin Gilchrist.
It would prove to be the lone mistake for Gilchrist, who made nine saves in the cage for Drexel including seven in the first half. Temple's Maddie Lilliock made eight saves, totaling four in each half.
In the final minute of the opening period, the Dragons used another corner to their advantage, this time with Walker scoring on the assist by McCarthy for a 2-1 lead at the break.
After taking 11 total shots in the first half, Temple came up with just four in the second as the Drexel defense held strong. The second period was scoreless for nearly 34 of the 35 minutes as the Owls battled to try to get the equalizer.
Temple utilized a kicking back for the final three-plus minutes of the contest to have an extra field player, but the Dragons earned a final penalty corner in that time and made it count with a goal by Megan Wiest.
The Owls' next game is their BIG EAST Conference opener, and is set for Friday, Sept. 16 against Providence at 6 p.m. The BIG EAST Digital Network will televise the contest live from Howarth Field.
