Women’s Soccer Falls in Overtime to Regionally Ranked Lehigh

9.20.16 | Women's Soccer

BETHLEHEM, PA – Temple women's soccer lost in heartbreak fashion on Tuesday night at Lehigh 1-0 in overtime. The game-winning goal came during the 99th minute of play.

Lehigh was ranked ninth in the Mid-Atlantic NSCAA NCAA Division I region coming into tonight's match. The Owls fall to 2-7 on the season as they finished conference play, while the Mountain Hawks stay unbeaten at 7-0-1.

The game was a deadlock through both the first and second halves as neither team was able to score a goal.

Nearing the end of the first overtime period, Lehigh's Clare Severe netted a ball past sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Nash. Severe corralled the ball near the top of the box and fired the shot into the top left corner of the goal.

During the 56th minute of the game, senior Cydney Niedermeyer was given a red card and Temple was forced to play nearly 43 minutes down a player. Despite it, they hung in before falling in OT.

Nash finished the match with nine saves and the lone goal against, while facing a season high 26 shots.

"She had her best game of the year," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "She had a lot of really good saves and looked like the Jordan from last year"

Offensively, the Owls had 11 shots as a team with redshirt-junior Kayla Cunningham leading the team's efforts with three shots.

O'Connor was pleased with his team's performance and felt they looked like Temple teams from the past.

"I have a lot more confidence after this game," O'Connor said. "They definitely looked like a Temple women's soccer team. They had the fight, spirit and determination. Lehigh hasn't been scored on this season and is undefeated – we almost took both of those records tonight."

Temple will have a nine-day break from game action until it opend conference play against Memphis on Thursday September 29. The match is set to kickoff at 3:30 p.m. at the Temple Sports Complex and will air on OwlsTV.
