Men's Soccer Opens Conference Play at UConn on Saturday

9.22.16 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's soccer is set to open up play in the American Athletic Conference with a road match against the UConn Huskies on Saturday. The Owls hit the road for Storrs looking for their first road victory against a Husky team that pushed them out of the conference tournament last season.

Coming off a dominant win against Fairfield last weekend, the Owls look to take the momentum of a 4-0 shutout into Saturday's match. Jorge Gomez Sanchez and Joonas Jokinen will look to lead an aggressive offensive line that has tallied 21 total points through seven matches.

Gomez Sanchez has accounted for 11 of those 21 points and currently leads the nation with 1.29 goals per game. With a hat trick against Fairfield and an 11-point week in total, Gomez Sanchez scooped up both the American Athletic Conference and Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week.

The Owls' defense, who have helped goalkeeper Alex Cagle to four shutouts this season, have combined a tight unit that has allowed only six goals and limited opponents to just 5.7 shots per game.

As a team, Temple remains at the top of the rankings in the American Athletic Conference, sitting atop Memphis and UConn who both boast a 5-3-0 record. In the NSCAA East Regional Poll, the Owls remain in the No. 5 spot.

The Matchup…
The Huskies welcome the Owls coming off a 2-1 victory over Rhode Island on Wednesday night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. The team now stands at 5-3-0 on their season and have tallied 14 goals and two shutouts.

Last year, Temple and UConn faced off twice with both matches going to the Huskies without a goal scored by the Owls. In regular season play, the Owls dropped the match 2-0. The teams went on to face off in the opening round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament, where UConn posted four unanswered goals to advance and end the Owls' season.

Overall, the Owls have yet to top the Huskies with a series record of 0-4-1. The lone draw came in 2013 when the Huskies were ranked No. 24 in the NSCAA National Poll.
