Field Hockey Joining the Fight Against Pediatric Cancer With the Go4TheGoal Foundation

9.26.16 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA – Temple field hockey is partnering with Temple women's soccer in order to raise money for Go4theGoal Foundation. Go4theGoal Foundation is an organization that strives to improve the lives of children battling cancer by providing financial support, developing and implementing unique hospital programs, funding innovative research, and granting personal wishes.

For both teams' home games on Sunday, Oct. 2, the Owls will be wearing gold laces to show support. The teams have also set up an account to raise money for the organization. The goal this season is $2,016.

Field hockey head coach Marybeth Freeman and women's soccer head coach Seamus O'Connor are both excited for their programs to help support and raise awareness for these heartbreaking diseases.

"As coaches and Division 1 athletes, we are privy to a life that affords us tremendous opportunities," said Freeman. "From travel across the country to high level education and competition, we experience things only few have the opportunity to have. We all started playing our sport at a young age and we have all grown through the experiences garnered through athletics. Our collaboration with Holy Cross field hockey and Temple women's soccer is about our athletes and our families giving back to the children and families affected by pediatric cancer. Donating through Go4TheGoal and providing aid to these families in need, knowing how much the activities we did in our own childhoods directly impacted where we are now, is a wonderful chance for us to give back."

"We are putting our support behind the Go4theGoal campaign to raise awareness for the need for support for Pediatric Cancer," O'Connor said. "It is a terrible disease which will affect over 15,000 kids.  I am so lucky to get to coach the leaders of tomorrow's world and we need to make sure that they are aware of their responsibility to the children of the world to try and make it a better place for them to live in.  We chose pediatric cancer as it is a terrible-emotional struggle for families but also very difficult financially for families to pay bills while they are worried about the health of their child.  We can help them by spreading the need for donating money to help ease the stress of paying those bills while they are doing whatever it takes to get their child healthy."

Temple field hockey will take on Holy Cross, while women's soccer faces conference opponent Tulsa. Both games are set to start at noon at the Temple Sports Complex.
