Field Hockey Hosts City Rival La Salle on Sunday at Noon

PHILADELPHIA - Temple's field hockey's first home weekend of the season continues on Sunday, Sept. 4, as the Owls take on city rival La Salle at noon. Temple is looking for its first win after a tough lineup of opening games, while the Explorers stand at 1-1 so far this season. The Owls are celebrating Phila Youth Field Hockey Day, and will sign autographs after the game.
Friday's game against Penn State, an 8-1 loss for the Owls, was the inaugural game to be played on Howarth Field at the new Temple Sports Complex. The crowd well exceeded the capacity of 500, with many alums among the attendees. Temple got on the scoreboard late in the first half to cut a 3-0 deficit to 3-1, but the Nittany Lions came on strong in the second half and scored four goals in the final 10 minutes of the contest.
Sophomore Jessika Daniels was the scorer for the Owls, notching her second career goal. Redshirt junior Sarah Keer was credited with the assist. Temple's defense made a total of 11 saves, including a pair of defensive saves by senior Ali Meszaros and freshman Becky Gerhart.
La Salle comes into the weekend at 1-1 overall with a 2-0 win vs. Central Michigan and a 3-2 overtime loss at Vermont. The Explorers, who went 9-9 in 2015, have returned seven starters this season including All-Atlantic 10 Second Team selection Kendall Kreider. Kreider, a junior, leads La Salle so far this year with two goals.Â
Temple leads La Salle 31-4-1 in the all-time series, and has won three straight. The last time the teams met was in 2014, with the Owls winning 5-1.
Sunday's contest is the second in a six-game homestand for the Owls, who will face Delaware and Drexel at home next weekend.
