1.11.17 | Men's Basketball
STORRS, Conn. - UConn's Kentan Facey recorded a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Huskies (7-9, 2-3) as they handed Temple a 73-59 loss at Gampel Pavilion. Another early deficit doomed the Owls (10-8, 1-4), who were unable to get within fewer than seven points in the second half.
In addition to Facey's double-double, UConn got a points-assists double-double from Jalen Adams who tied his career high with 11 assists while posting 11 points.
Shizz Alston, Jr. reached double figures for the eighth time in nine games, leading Temple with 13 points and six assists. Daniel Dingle and Mark Williams scored 10 points apiece, with Dingle adding a team, season and career-tying nine rebounds while Williams came off the bench to hit 4-of-6 from the field including 2-of-3 from long range.
The early conference run of bad first halves continued for the Owls, who at one point missed 12 straight field goals. Temple hit four of its last five shots in the half just to finish at 32 percent shooting, while the Huskies made close to 56 percent of their attempts.
After an early 8-8 tie, Temple was without a field goal for almost eight minutes as UConn went ahead 22-9. Williams ended the drought with a three-pointer at 9:35, starting a 7-0 run for the Owls that cut the deficit to six.
Temple later cut a 12-point margin down to seven with three minutes left, but UConn sank its final five field goals to lead by as many as 14 points twice in the final minute. Dingle came up with a buzzer-beating shot from behind the arc to make it an 11-point game at halftime, 39-28.
UConn took its largest lead of 17 points with a 6-0 run to open the second half, but Temple answered with an 8-0 run to stay within striking distance. Alani Moore II started the run with a three-pointer, Temple's first field goal of the second half, with 16 and a half minutes to go. Obi Enechionyia capped the run with a trey of his own at 14:38, narrowing UConn's lead to 45-36.
Temple went on to make four of its first nine attempts from long range in the second half, with Williams' second three-pointer of the game putting the Owls within seven, 51-44 at 11:34. Temple matched that seven-point deficit twice more, but could come no closer.
The Owls are back home for their next contest, a 4 p.m. game against Tulsa on Saturday, Jan. 14.
