Plunkett's Third-Place Finish Highlights January NAC for Temple Fencing

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Freshman Kerry Plunkett's third-place finish in junior women's sabre highlighted four days of competition for Temple fencing at the January North American Cup (NAC) held Jan. 6-9 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
Plunkett tied for third among 143 competitors in the event, and was also the Owls' top finisher in Division I women's sabre, placing 39th.
"We had a short break for the holidays and the team came back hungry," said assistant coach/sabre coach Josh Herring. "Kerry had a comeback victory in her round of 32 (in junior women's sabre) and then had impressive victories in the next two rounds. She showed a lot of resolve over a long day and never gave up."
Fellow freshman Malia Hee also had a strong finish in junior women's sabre, placing 19th. In Division I women's sabre, Hee placed 61st.
In all, the Owls had 13 fencers place in the top 64 and two in the top 32.
Sophomore Ally Micek placed 41st in junior women's epee, while freshman Camille Simmons finished 58th. Sophomore Fiona Fong was the top finisher in Division I women's epee, placing 58th, with Micek right behind her in 64th. Sophomore Auset Muhammad tied for 54th in junior women's foil, while freshman Alexa Prasher placed 92nd in Division I women's foil.
"Coming off of just two days of practice after the break, this was a meet to get us started for the rest of our season," said head coach Dr. Nikki Franke. "It was a chance to fence some good competition as we prepare for our upcoming meets, starting with the Penn State Invitational on Sunday."
The Owls will have another shot against defending national champion Columbia on Sunday, Jan. 15 at Penn State, after losing by just a point to the Lions on Nov. 5. Temple will also take on North Carolina, Duke, Haverford, Yale and the host Nittany Lions.
