Fencing Finishes a Strong 4-2 at Penn State Invitational

1.15.17 | Women's Fencing

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - In a long day of competition, Temple fencing came out with a strong winning record of 4-2 at the Penn State Invitational. The Owls (12-4) earned victories against Yale, Haverford, North Carolina and Duke, while falling only to defending national champion Columbia and to nationally ranked Penn State.

The scores for the day had Temple falling to Columbia 16-11, beating Haverford 25-2, beating UNC 18-9, edging Yale 14-13, losing narrowly to Penn State 14-13 and finishing the day with a win over Duke by a score of 16-11.

"All in all it was a productive day for us," said Temple head coach Dr. Nikki Franke. "It was a tough rematch with Columbia to start the day, but we hung in there and lost several bouts just 5-4. Against Penn State, it came down to the last bout. Our win against Yale came down to the final two bouts and we won both, 5-4, which was very exciting. Overall this season, three of our four losses have been by just a point, so I think that says a lot about what we can achieve going forward."

Many fencers posted impressive records despite facing some of the top fencers from the other teams. Freshman Malia Hee went 9-2 overall for sabre, while freshman Kennedy Lovalace posted an 11-7 record for the foil squad in fencing every single bout of the day. Epee had three fencers with seven wins as senior Alexandra Keft went 7-2, sophomore Quinn Duwelius went 7-3 and freshman Camille Simmons finished a perfect 7-0.

Despite a 5-4 win for epee against the defending national champion Lions, the Owls lost 16-11 in their first match of the day. Both Keft and Ally Micek posted 2-1 records against Columbia, as did Auset Muhammad in foil and Hee and Kerry Plunkett in sabre.

Temple then rattled off three straight wins, cruising to a 25-2 win over Haverford and an 18-9 win against UNC before edging Yale in an intense battle, 14-13. Keft and Simmons both went a perfect 3-0 against UNC.

The foil squad led the way with a 6-3 victory over Yale, while sabre also pulled out a 5-4 win. Lovelace and Alexa Prasher were leaders in the Yale win for foil, both going 2-1, while Muhammad was 1-0. For the sabre squad, both Victoria Suber and Blessing Olaode finished 2-1 vs. the Bulldogs.

In the Owls' fifth match of the meet, the host Nittany Lions got the best of them by just one point, 14-13. Temple won 6-3 in foil against PSU, but was edged by a single point in epee and three points in sabre. All three foilists went 2-1 against PSU - Muhammad, Lovelace and Prasher, as did Keft for epee and Hee for sabre.

To cap the day, Temple won 16-11 vs. Duke, with epee earning a convincing 7-2 victory against the Blue Devils. Hee went 3-0 against Duke.

The Owls will be back in action closer to home next weekend, facing Cornell, Northwestern, Sacred Heart, Duke and host Penn at the Philadelphia Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 21.
