Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season with 7-1 Victory Over Monmouth

PHILADELPHIA – In the Owls spring-season opener, Temple men's tennis was able to post a 7-1 victory over 2016 MAAC Champions Monmouth. Recently ranked Artem Kapshuk played in both the number one slots for doubles and singles, winning both.
"The guys played extremely well in this opening match of the spring season," said head coach Steve Mauro. "I was really happy with the way they came out in both singles and doubles. Monmouth won their conference last year and they're a really strong team so I knew were were going to have to play well to beat them. I think this was a really good start to the begin the season."
The Owls doubles pairs swept the Hawks, with Kapshuk and Uladzimir Dorash grabbing an 8-4 victory over Monmouth's pair of Filipek and Pipoli.
Following Kapshuk and Dorash, Florian Mayer and Thomas Sevel topped Hawks duo Gomez and Vieira 8-5. That win was followed up by a third from the Owls when Vineet Naran and Francisco Bohorquez posted an 8-4 win against Giuffrida and Chen.
In singles play, Kapshuk led off with a 6-2, 6-,2 victory over Filipek. Mayer, Sevel, Dorash, Eric Biscoveanu, and Naran were all able to grab two-set victories on their way to the final 6-1 mark.
The Owls return to the court for the VCU Invited beginning on January 21. Opponents in the tournament will include Morgan State, Charlotte and the hosting VCU Rams.
