10 in a Row for Women's Basketball as the Owls Top Houston

HOUSTON - The Temple women's basketball team grabbed win number 10 in a row, topping Houston 69-57 on the road on Wednesday night. The winning streak has the Owls season record up to 14-3, including a 5-0 mark in American Athletic Conference play. Houston dips to 8-10 overall, 1-4 in The American.
Houston made it a close game with extended runs in the second and third quarters, but each time the Owls responded with surges of their own to put things away. Temple shot 42.9% (9-21) from three-point range and held a 49-31 edge on the glass, working around 19 turnovers.
Temple had a number of top performances on the night, led by a double-double from senior Feyonda Fitzgerald who poured in 22 points with 11 assists. Junior Donnaizha Fountain led all scorers with 23 points, finishing just shy of her own double-double with nine rebounds. Senior Ruth Sherrill smashed her career-high with 19 rebounds, while juniors Alliya Butts (14 points) and Khadijah Berger (4 assists) filled out the stat sheet for the Owls.
Temple opened the game with seven unanswered points, before Houston finally broke through with a three at the 7:00 mark. The Owls pushed the lead to nine on back-to-back threes from Butts before the Cougars cut it to 15-9 on a Chyanne Butler three. Temple responded with scores from Fitzgerald and Sherrill before Houston ended the frame with a lay-up, putting the Owls on top, 19-11, after one.
A 10-4 Temple run opened the second quarter, as Fitzgerald struck for eight of the ten points, putting the Owls up 29-15. Houston put together a run of its own, theirs 9-2 to cut the deficit to seven at 31-24. A jumper from Fountain pushed the Owls' lead back to nine, but another Cougar surge, this one 9-3 got the hosts to within three at 36-33. Temple was able to get a Fountain free throw and a Butts putback to close the frame with a six-point lead.
At the break, Fitzgerald led all scorers with 17 points, while Butts added 11 and Fountain seven. Sherrill and Fountain led the Owls to a 26-17 lead on the glass, combining for 13 rebounds. Four players had five or more points to lead Houston.
Temple opened the third quarter with a 15-4 run, which included 11 points from Fountain. Leading 54-37 with 4:28 on the clock, Fitzgerald went down for the Owls, and Houston surged. The Cougars used a 13-0 run to close the quarter, cutting Temple's lead to 54-50 after three.
A 10-3 fourth quarter run from Temple effectively put the game out of reach. Fitzgerald returned for the Owls to complete her double-double, as Temple led 64-53 with under five to play. A 4-0 run from Houston made it 64-57, but Temple ended the game on a 6-0 run to set the final to 69-57.
Houston had four players in double figures, led by 12 points from Serithia Hawkins. Jasmyne Harris (11 points), Angela Harris (10 points, 8 rebounds), and Jacqueline Blake (10 points) rounded out the Cougars' box score.
Temple returns home for another conference clash on Saturday, hosting Memphis at 2:00 p.m.
