Gymnastics Opens Home Slate on Sunday Against Ursinus

1.19.17 | Women's Gymnastics

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's gymnastics kicks off its three-meet home slate this weekend with a dual meet against Ursinus College. The Owls are debuting in McGonigle Hall after two record-setting competitions to start their season. The 1 p.m. competition looks to bring even more success and build on the 192.225 team score set last weekend.

The first home meet for the Owls will also be Military Appreciation Day, recognizing all armed forces for their amazing service and dedication past, present and future. Honorary scarfs will be available to any military personnel with a valid ID.

On Sunday, the Owls will kick off the meet on the event in which they now hold the program record. The vault squad, who earned a record-setting 48.875 in Knoxville, swept the top four spots among all competitors at the Ozone Classic. Aya Mahgoub grabbed the top spot while also becoming the fifth Temple gymnast to post a score of 9.825 on vault. Sahara Gipson's 9.8 ranked second with Jaylene Everett and Yasmin Eubanks tying for the third and fourth spots on the podium with marks of 9.775.

Breahna Wiczkowski is also coming off an event title last weekend. The sophomore posted a 9.7 on beam to tie for the top mark of the evening.

Both bar and floor squads improved in the second meet of the season. Alexa Phillip led the team for the second week in a row with a consistent score of 9.725. Overall, the lineup posted a 48.275 to improve from week one's 48.125. Briana Odom bounced back from a missed floor set in week one to lead the team in week two with a score of 9.75, tying for the top spot among all gymnasts. The full lineup posted a 48.075.

In the conference, the Owls currently rank third with a team average of 192.075. Penn and Brown hold the number one and two spots with one competition under their belts.

The visiting Ursinus Bears head to Philadelphia after their season and home opener against West Chester. The Bears posted a 186.875 to the Rams' 191.05. Kaelin Ruoss had the highest score of the day for the team, posting a 9.75 on beam.

In the all-time series, the Owls lead the Bears 49-2. The last meeting between the two squads was at the 2016 Rutgers quad meet where the Owls topped the Bears 191.625-188.20.

Sunday's competition is set for 1 p.m. and will be streamed live on OwlsTV.
