Track & Field Makes Steady Improvement at U.S. Navy Mid-Week
1.19.17 | Women's Track and Field
Annapolis, Md. – On Thursday Temple women's track and field competed at the women-only U.S. Navy Mid-Week, hosted at the Wesley Brown Field House. The Owls held strong to post seven first-place finishes over nine events.
"With today's meet being an all-women's competition, it was short which allowed the team to focus on what they wanted to do," said head coach Elvis Forde.
The meet opened up with the distance medley relay featuring Millie Howard, Grace Moore, Katie Leisher, Katie Pinson, Kenya Gaston, Jazmyne Williams, Ashton Dunkley, and Madison Beecher. Each runner then competed in individual events for the squad to reap three first-place finishes.
Gaston won the 500 meter race with a time of 1:18.49. Williams trailed behind in third place, finishing the race in 1:19.15
Howard took first place in the 1K race with a time of 2:57.13. Leisher took on the mile run and was able to top her competition in just 5:07.86. Finally, Moore won the 3K race with a time of 9:58.09.
Freshman Ebonee Jackson competed in three events: the 60 meter dash, the 60 meter hurdles, and the 200 meter race, reaching personal bests in all three. Jackson earned third overall in the 60m after running a 7.83. She then took to the hurdles and snagged first place, finishing the race in 8.85. Finally, she returned to the track for the 200m,
finishing with a time of 25.87 (7th).
"Ebonee had a few good personal records today and I am proud of her performance in the 200m," said Forde. "She recognizes the potential that she has to do great things for herself and the program and is realizing that she has to work very hard for what she wants to achieve." Freshman Mariah Slade also ran in the 200 meter race, reaching a small personal record at 25.75 seconds.
The winning 4x400m relay team consisted of Gaston, Crystal Jones, Williams, and Re'ona Pettway. The four managed to beat only five other teams in 4:03.02.
On the field, senior Sydnee Jacques bested her competition in the triple jump with a mark of 11:04m.
"Overall we performed much better today than our last time out at the Towson Invite. You can definitely see the steady improvement in our team," Forde stated. "We have seen very good efforts from our freshman and consistently in sophomore distance runner Katie Leisher. As a whole we still have a lot of work to be done, but we'll need to pick up the pace a little bit in the coming week in order remain contenders among our competition and to get the exposure that our athletes need."
On Jan. 27-28, Temple women's track and field will participate in one of the most competitive meets of the season, the Penn State National.
