Third Quarter Pushes Women's Basketball Past Memphis

1.21.17 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA -- A 16-0 run early in the third quarter led the Temple women's basketball team to their 11th-straight victory, a 66-51 win at home against conference-foe Memphis. The victory improves Temple to 15-3 overall with an unblemished 6-0 mark in The American. Memphis dips to 8-11, 1-5 following the loss.

Temple trailed by as many as seven, with Memphis using a 53.8% shooting performance in the second quarter to build their largest lead of the game. From there, Temple locked down on defense, using transition buckets to build on a 16-0 run that turned the seven-point deficit into a nine-point lead. The game was never in doubt from there, as the Owls went up by as many as 22 points before closing out the victory.

Junior Donnaizha Fountain led all players with 19 points, notching her third-straight game as Temple's leading scorer. Senior Ruth Sherrill tied a career high with 13 points, also nabbing a career-best four blocks with five rebounds. Junior Alliya Butts added 12 points, five assists, and four steals, while senior Feyonda Fitzgerald, who only attempted four field goals in the game, finished with five points and a game-best nine assists. Juniors Tanaya Atkinson (7 points, 8 rebounds) and Khadijah Berger (8 points, 5 rebounds) rounded out the individual highlights for the Owls.

Temple trailed most of the first quarter, knotting things at 7-7 but falling behind by three points on two occasions. After Memphis took a 12-9 lead with 3:51 on the clock, Temple used a 7-3 run to take its first lead of the game, 16-15, on a Fountain three.

The Owls pushed the lead to 18-15 at the start of the second on a put-back from Atkinson. From there, the lead changed hands four times before landing at 27-27 on a Fitzgerald jumper. Memphis was able to go on a run before the break, however, scoring six-unanswered to take a 33-27 lead into the locker room.

After 20 minutes, Fountain led all players with 10 points, while elsewhere for the Owls, Sherrill, Butts, and Atkinson each had four points. For Memphis, Brea Elmore had nine points, while Cheyenne Creighton had seven.

Though Memphis struck first in the third quarter, the frame was all Temple. After the initial Tiger bucket set the score to 34-27, Temple responded with a 16-0 run. The surge saw the Owls shoot 85.7%, and it turned Temple's largest deficit of the game into its largest lead, a 43-34 advantage. Memphis re-grouped to score back-to-back buckets making it 43-38, but another Temple run, this time, 9-2, put Temple up 52-40 after three.

The Owl offense continued to roll into the fourth quarter, opening the frame with an 8-1 run. Temple led by as many as 22 before emptying the bench, with the final score standing at 66-51.

The Cherry and White are back in action on Wednesday, closing out Big 5 play against Penn at the Palestra at 7:00 p.m. A Temple win would give the Owls the Big 5 Championship outright.
