Men's Basketball Beats Memphis 77-66 Behind Alston, Jr.'s 22 Points

1.25.17 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Scoring over 20 points for a third game in a row, sophomore Shizz Alston, Jr. led Temple men's basketball to a 77-66 win over visiting Memphis (15-6, 5-3). Alston hit 4-of-8 from long range, making it 14 three-pointers in three contests as he finished with 22 points for the Owls (11-10, 2-6).

Temple's lead was no fewer than six points for the final 18 minutes, and they led by double digits much of the way. The Tigers narrowed a 14-point lead to seven on three occasions in the final four minutes, but the Owls held them off, largely thanks to senior Mark Williams

On his birthday, Williams scored a season-high 15 points including 10 in the final six minutes to keep separation between Temple and Memphis.

Also scoring in double figures for the Owls was senior Daniel Dingle with 16 points, marking his 10th double-digits scoring effort in the last 11 games. Freshman Quinton Rose played a key role off the bench, adding a career- and game-high five assists to a career- and game-high eight rebounds.

The largest lead for either team in the first half was a seven-point advantage for Memphis just past the midway point, 18-11 at 9:41. Dingle sparked the Owls in an early 10-0 run with back-to-back three-pointers for their largest lead of five points, 10-5 at 14:35. The Tigers answered with a 13-1 run for their seven-point lead, but it was a tight half the rest of the way.

Alston scored seven points in the final nine minutes to help Temple get within one point on three occasions before a Williams trey gave the Owls a 28-26 lead with three minutes left.

Scoring slowed in that final stretch with Memphis tying the score and then taking a lead, but Rose took an Alani Moore II assist for a layup at the buzzer that gave the game its fourth tie at halftime, 30-30.

Alston scored eight straight points in 12-2 run for the Owls early in the second half, which was capped by a Moore three-pointer at 16:23 for the first double-digit lead for either team in the contest, 44-34.

After Memphis came back within six, Temple got its ninth and 10th treys of the game from Obi Enechionyia and Alston for a 12-point, 50-38 lead at 11:35. The long ball gave Temple separation yet again after the Tigers narrowed the gap, as Moore's third three-pointer made it an 11-point game at the eight-minute mark.

Shortly after, a three-point play for Dingle at 6:31 gave Temple its largest lead of the game, 60-46, and Memphis came within no fewer than seven the rest of the way. Jeremiah Martin, who had zero points at halftime for Memphis, led the Tigers' comeback attempts with 16 second-half points to lead his team overall in the game. He scored 10 of those points in the final four minutes, but Williams answered every time for the Owls.

Over the final minute and eight seconds, the Owls hit 5-of-6 free throws to keep the Tigers at bay.

Next up for Temple is a two-game road trip, starting with a 10 p.m. (ET) contest at Houston on Saturday, Jan. 28 (ESPNU / 1210 AM WPHT).
