Men's Basketball Begins Two-Game Road Trip at Houston Late Saturday Night
1.27.17 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - Temple men's basketball begins a two-game road swing at Houston on Saturday, Jan. 28 in a late contest at 10 p.m. Eastern (ESPNU / 1210 AM WPHT). The Cougars (14-7, 5-4) are one of two American Athletic Conference teams the Owls (11-10, 2-6) will face just once in the regular season.
Temple is coming off a much-needed win in its most recent game, a 77-66 defeat of Memphis at home on Jan. 25. It was just the second conference victory for the Owls, who have suffered two three-game streaks of league losses.
With a game-high 22 points in the Memphis win, sophomore Shizz Alston, Jr. hit the 20-point mark for a third game in a row and became the Owls' leading scorer this season with 14.2 ppg (ninth in the conference). Alston scored a career-high 25 points in back-to-back games prior to the most recent one.
Also averaging in double figures in scoring for Temple are junior Obi Enechionyia (13.8 ppg) and senior Daniel Dingle (12.2 ppg) with freshman Quinton Rose just under the mark at 9.4 ppg.Â
With 8.8 three-pointers made per game, Temple leads all teams in the league this season. The Owls have been shooting the long ball especially well of late, making 10 or more three-pointers in four of the last six games including each of the last two. Temple has twice made a season-high 12 three-pointers (vs. GW/at Cincinnati) and in the Memphis win, the Owls hit 11 shots from long range. Leading the charge are Enechionyia (47 three-pointers) and Alston (42 three-pointers), with Alston draining a whopping 14 treys total in the last three games. Â
Houston had lost three straight conference games before defeating Tulane in its most recent contest, 65-51 on Jan. 24. The Cougars had an impressive non-conference record of 9-3 to begin the season, but did not face any ranked teams until league play.Â
Junior guard Rob Gray leads Houston and the American Athletic Conference with 20.2 ppg, and has shot 48 percent from the field this season. The Cougars have another top-10 conference leader in scoring in senior guard Damyean Dotson with 15.3 ppg, with Dotson ranking second in the league with 3.1 three-pointers made per game.
Temple and Houston are meeting for the sixth time, with the Cougars holding a slim, 3-2 lead in the series. The Cougars handed Temple a big loss early in the 2015-16 conference season on the Owls' home court, winning 77-50 on Jan. 2, but Temple rebounded for a 69-66 come-from-behind road win on Feb. 21.
Following Saturday night's game, the Owls will head to Tulane for an 8 p.m. (ET) game on Tuesday, Jan. 31 (ESPNews / 1210 AM WPHT).
