Temple Adds Graduate Transfer Mike Jones
1.30.17 | Football
PHILADELPHIA – Temple University announced the addition of Mike Jones to the 2017 football team. Jones is a graduate of North Carolina Central and has one season of eligibility remaining.
Jones (5-11, 187) is a highly decorated cornerback and returner who had an outstanding career at North Carolina Central. He earned numerous all-freshman honors in 2013, his first season out of Milford Mill Academy in Baltimore, Md., where he was a three-time all-county selection.
Following his successful freshman campaign, Jones went on to become first-team All-MEAC at both cornerback and return specialist in 2014 and 2016. He missed most of the 2015 season due to injury and received a medical redshirt.
In 2016, Jones made 30 tackles and had two interceptions and five pass break-ups. As a returner, he averaged 22.0-yards per punt return and scored two touchdowns.
Entering the bowl season, Jones' success prompted ESPN Draft analyst Todd McShay to project Jones' 2017 draft status by saying "Mike Jones stands out to me as the best" of a list of late round draft choices. That status is sure to rise with a year of experience in Geoff Collins' and Taver Johnson's defense.
Jones graduated North Carolina Central with a degree in sports management. He is currently enrolled as a graduate student at Temple.
