Men's Basketball Wins on the Road at Tulane, 79-71
1.31.17 | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Quinton Rose scored six points in the final minutes to help Temple men's basketball hold off Tulane in a 79-71 road win. Rose scored a team-high 18 points overall while also leading the Owls (12-11, 3-7) with a career-high nine rebounds. Temple hit all six of its free-throw attempts in the final 36 seconds of the game to end any comeback hopes for the Green Wave (4-18, 1-9).
Three others also scored in double figures for the Owls, who shot 51 percent as a team. Shizz Alston, Jr. posted 15 points and six boards, while Obi Enechionyia and Mark Williams each scored 13 points. Daniel Dingle and Alani Moore II chipped in eight points apiece, with Dingle dishing a game-high six assists.
Near the seven-minute mark of the second half, Temple had its largest lead of 13 points, 67-54. The Green Wave used a 12-2 run to cut the margin to three with 3:27 left, but Rose and company kept them at bay in the final stretch.
Cameron Reynolds was impressive for Tulane, finishing with a game- and career-high 29 points including 18 in the second half and eight in the comeback run.
After some early runs for both teams, the final eight minutes of the first half was a back-and-forth battle that saw neither team ever lead by more than two. Overall, the period featured seven ties and five lead changes, with both teams shooting in the high 40s from the field.
The Owls were down 13-6 early, but soon afterwards Rose scored back-to-back buckets to cap a 6-0 spurt and give Temple a 17-16 lead at 11:36. Tulane followed with an 8-1 run for a six-point, 24-18 lead at 9:10, but Rose broke Temple's drought with a three-pointer that began a 10-2 stretch for the Owls.
Enechionyia finished that run with a pair of baskets for a 28-26 lead with six minutes remaining, but the teams traded points the rest of the way. Williams scored the final bucket for a 34-34 tie at the two-minute mark, and both squads were scoreless in those final minutes of the half.
Temple had made 15-of-26 (58 percent) from the field through 18 minutes of action, but went 0-for-5 with two offensive and two defensive rebounds in the last two minutes.
After the game's ninth tie at 17:44 of the second half, the Owls used a 7-0 run to start pulling away. They got their first double-digit lead at 12:33 on their third three-pointer of the period, and built the lead to as many as 13 with 6:45 remaining.
Temple went just over four minutes without a field goal during Tulane's 12-2 run, but Rose once again ended the drought and the Owls were solid at the stripe to keep the Green Wave from coming all the way back.
The Owls will return home to celebrate Hooter the Owl's birthday at their next game, a 1 p.m. contest against USF on Sunday, Feb. 5 (CSN / 1210 AM WPHT).
