Volleyball Welcomes Tulsa and SMU to McGonigle this Weekend

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team continues conference play this weekend, with a pair of matches in McGonigle Hall. Tulsa comes to town on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. start, while the Owls will play SMU on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.

PROMOTIONS
> The Owls will host their annual "Hawaiian Night" on Friday against Tulsa, thanks to the Heirakuji, Cefra, and Matautia families.
> Free t-shirts will be given to Temple students, while supplies last.
> On Sunday, Temple will honor the Owls' 1997 Atlantic 10 Championship team at intermission.

THE OWLS
> Temple is 10-6 overall with a 6-2 record in conference play.
> The Owls swept their last conference series -- their second straight sweep against road opponents.
> On Friday, Temple picked up a 3-0 win at USF, while on Sunday, the Owls recorded a come-from-behind 3-2 win at UCF.

LAST TIME OUT
> Temple volleyball rallied from down 0-2 in the match and 12-9 in the fifth set to stun UCF at home on Sunday afternoon. 
> The Owls won the final three sets to take the match 16-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-22, 15-13.
 > Temple fell victim to extended UCF runs in both the first and second sets, falling behind 0-2.
> The Owls then took over the momentum in the final three sets, combining for a .320 clip on offense and averaging 16 digs per set on defense.
> In the fifth and final set, the Owls trailed 12-9, before a 6-1 run gave the set and match to TU.
> Senior Izzy Rapacz led all players with 25 kills hitting .537, adding six digs and two blocks.
> Senior Kyra Coundourides tallied a double-double with 48 assists and 16 digs. 
> Junior Mia Heirakuji led the Owls' defense with 17 digs.

SCOUTING TEMPLE
> Rapacz leads the team with 3.40 kills per set, also averaging 1.07 blocks per set.
> Redshirt Freshman Dana Westfield contributes 2.47 kills per frame.
> Janine Simmons (1.88 kills/set) and Iva Deak (1.80 kills/set) shore up the middle for the Owls.
> Coundourides averages 9.64 assists per set, with that number rising to 11.66 in conference play.
> Heirakuji tops the Owls' defense with 3.83 digs per set. 
> Senior Dara Peric contributes all around with 1.78 kills per set and 2.61 per frame.
> As a team, the Owls hit .241, holding opponents to a .189 attack.

SCOUTING TULSA
> Tulsa enters this weekend 9-11 overall with a 3-5 record against American opponents.
> The Hurricane are led by Emily Thorson who averages 3.92 kills and 2.30 digs per set.
> Emily Hubbard (2.29 kills/set) and Callie Cook (2.08 kills/set) also add to the offense.
> Lindsey Ledyard (6.04 assists/set) and Mariah Pardo (3.76 assists/set) split the setting duties.
> Taylor Horsfall leads the defense to the tune of 5.79 digs per frame.
> Cook and Ebony Carter are tied for the team lead with 66 total blocks.
> Tulsa hits .185 as a team, holding opponents to a .181 attack.

TEMPLE VS. TULSA
> Temple leads the all-time series against the Hurricane, 5-1.
> The Owls have won four-straight against Tulsa, sweeping the season series in both 2016 and 2015.

SCOUTING SMU
> SMU is 13-6 overall with a 7-1 mark in conference play.
> The Mustangs have a potent offense that sees three players average around 3.00 kills per set.
> Lauren Mills leads the team with 3.54 kills per set, also averaging 3.41 digs per frame.
> Katie Hegarty (3.11 kills/set) and Brittany Adams (2.97 kills/set) round out the top hitters.
> Kendall Patterson is the primary setter, dishing out 9.80 assists per frame, while adding 2.43 digs per set.
> Montana Watts leads the defense with 4.68 digs per set.
> Lexi Nordmann is the team's top blocker, tallying 1.23 per set, while Kelly Brunstein leads SMU with 14 solo.
> As a team, SMU hits .208, holding opponents to a .181 attack.

TEMPLE VS. SMU
> The Owls are 5-4 all-time against SMU.
> Temple and SMU have split the season series 1-1 in all four years of American play.
