Field Hockey Heads South to Face ODU in BIG EAST Action on Friday

10.5.17 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - This week features one road and one home game for Temple field hockey, as the Owls (3-7, 0-3) head to BIG EAST foe Old Dominion on Friday before hosting UC Davis on Sunday. Friday's contest against the Monarchs (4-7, 1-2) is set for 4 p.m.

Scouting the Owls
> Temple enters Friday's game having lost all three of its BIG EAST contests so far, and needs a win at ODU to help keep its conference tournament hopes alive.
> The Owls are welcoming back their alums on Sunday, and will recognize all those in attendance at halftime of their noon game vs. UC Davis.
> Temple has won three in a row against ODU, with each of the last two coming when the Monarchs were nationally ranked.
> Most recently, the Owls were edged 3-2 at Georgetown on Sept. 29.
> Prior to that, the Owls earned a thrilling, 3-2 come-from-behind overtime win vs. Sacred Heart on Sept. 24. Temple trailed 1-0 at halftime and 2-0 in the second half before coming back to tie in regulation. In overtime, sophomore Kathryn Edgar recorded her third assist in as many goals, feeding senior Rachael Mueller for the game-winner.
> Freshman Taylor Alba recorded both her first career goal and first career assist in the Owls' loss at Georgetown.
> Mueller leads the Owls with five goals and four assists for 14 total points. Edgar and redshirt senior Sarah Keer have scored two goals each, while Edgar and Mueller lead the team with four assists apiece.
> With nine defensive saves, the Owls rank second among all teams in NCAA Division I. Junior Nellie Doyle, redshirt junior Ashley Kucera and freshman Dani Batze lead the way with two defensive saves each, while Edgar, redshirt junior Maris Stern and sophomore Becky Gerhart have one apiece.
> Junior Chloe Johnson has been the goalkeeper of record in three of the Owls' last four games, going 2-1. She started for the first time in her career at Holy Cross and made a career-high eight saves. She made seven more vs. #1 UConn, and made three without allowing a single goal in 30 minutes of action vs. Sacred Heart.

Scouting Old Dominion
> The Monarchs are 4-7 overall but have lost three straight coming into Friday's game. Two of those were to Top 25 teams, and they have played six ranked opponents overall, going 1-5 in those games.
> ODU defeated then-#21 American 4-2 early in the season after a narrow, 3-2 loss vs. then-#7 Penn State. The Monarchs also suffered an OT, 3-2 loss at #19 JMU.
> Sophomore Erin Huffman leads the Monarchs with seven goals and 15 total points. Freshman Cameran Nery-Strickland has the overall team lead with four assists. Five players have scored two or more goals for ODU, which returned nine starters from last year's 7-10 squad.

All-Time Series
> While ODU leads Temple 20-4-1 all-time, the Owls have had plenty of recent success with three straight wins.
> Last year, the Owls upset #13 ODU 2-1 in overtime, and Temple earned a 1-0 win at #12 ODU the year before. Current senior Rachael Mueller, who has two game-winning goals in 2017, scored last year's OT game-winner vs. ODU.
