Field Hockey Prevails over UC Davis in Overtime, 3-2
10.8.17 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - Redshirt senior Sarah Keer was awarded the first penalty stroke of her career, and calmly lifted it into the cage to give Temple field hockey (4-8) a 3-2 overtime win against visiting UC Davis (1-11). The win was extra-special for the Owls, who had a number of alums in attendance from across the years for Alumnae Day.
Keys to the Game
> Temple was forced to come from behind after trailing UC Davis 1-0 at halftime.
> The Aggies scored early and late in regulation, taking their one-goal lead in the 10th minute and then tying the game with four minutes to go.
> Despite six first-half penalty corners and 11 total shots, Temple was unable to get on the board in the opening period.
> Just five minutes into the second half, freshman Taylor Alba fed a cross from the right side to senior Rachael Mueller who drove it into the lower left corner of the cage to tie the game at 1-1.
> Less than four minutes after getting on the board, the Owls struck again as sophomore Maddie Merton redirected a shot by sophomore Kathryn Edgar on a penalty corner for a 2-1 lead.
> Junior Chloe Johnson made three saves in the second half and almost held the Aggies off, but they were able to convert on one of four penalty-corner chances to make it 2-2 in the 67th minute.
> Nearly 10 minutes had elapsed in overtime when Mueller drew the foul that gave Keer a chance for the penalty stroke, which she coverted for the win.
Game Notes
> Mueller's goal was her team-leading sixth of the season, while Merton's goal was her second of the year.
> Keer's tally was her third in 2017, and the first on a stroke in her career.
> Edgar now has a team-best five assists this season, while Alba notched the second of her season and career.
> Johnson finished with five saves in improving to 3-2 for the season.
> Among the alumnae in attendance were Hall of Fame Coach Tina Sloan Green, and Howarth Field's namesake, Cherifa (Nouri) Howarth.
Quotable
> "I was really happy to see the turnout from our alums today," said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. "We wanted to make it a special event for them. We so appreciate and value their contributions on the sideline, and their Temple field hockey spirit means a lot to me and the program."
"I'm really pleased we were able to find a way. It wasn't the prettiest hockey, but it was good, quality team hockey. We made it a focus to look at our front field and our movements, and I thought we were able to put that in place."
"Our freshmen did a good job today. Some people came off the bench that made some quality contributions. I think Taylor Alba probably had the most consistently well-played game to date, as far as just keeping it simple. She was really able to be a catalyst for a lot of our attack."
"I thought we had some big saves in there by Chloe Johnson. I'm also really happy with all our forwards and how we were able to connect more in our attacking half of the field."
Next Up
> The Owls will host two games next weekend, starting with a 6 p.m. contest against BIG EAST and city rival Villanova on Friday, Oct. 13.
