Volleyball Takes Down Rival Cincinnati

PHILADELPHIA -- Temple volleyball used a balanced team effort to take down rival Cincinnati, a 2016 NCAA Tournament team, on Sunday afternoon at McGonigle Hall. The Owls moved to 4-2 in conference play (8-6) overall with a 25-20, 25-18, 19-25, 25-18 victory over the Bearcats (6-12, 4-2). 

KEYS TO THE MATCH
> Temple got contributions from every rotation, hitting .247 while holding Cincinnati to a .160 attack.
> The Owls racked up 14 total blocks, the team's best effort in conference play this season.
> Temple combined to hit .340 in the first two sets, going up 2-0 with 25-20 and 25-18 wins.
> Cincinnati got in the board with a 25-19 win in the third, hitting .268 to Temple's .111.
> In the fourth set, Cincinnati had the momentum before a 9-0 Owls' run, keyed by an eight-point serving run from Kyra Coundourides, turned the tables.
> The Owls finished out the set 25-18, taking the match, 3-1.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
> Temple got double-doubles from three players -- Coundourides, senior Izzy Rapacz, and freshman Katerina Papazoglou
> Four different Temple players notched 10 or more kills in the match.
> Coundourides finished her day with 55 assists, 15 digs, and a career-best six blocks.
> Rapacz led the Owls with 17 kills, adding 13 digs and four blocks.
> Freshman Dana Westfield tallied 15 kills hitting .314 with a pair of blocks.
> Papazoglou had a career-day, notching collegiate bests of 11 kills and 18 digs.
> Senior Janine Simmons finished with 10 kills, hitting a massive .562, with four blocks.
> Junior Iva Deak tallied eight kills and eight blocks.
> Junior Mia Heirakuji led Temple's defense with 19 digs.
> Freshman Averi Salvador tallied nine digs to wrap up the highlights.

SET ONE: Temple 25, Cincinnati 20
> Neither team was able to grab a lead in the first 14 points of the set.
> Temple edged ahead 9-7, but Cincinnati responded and tied it up 10-10.
> The Owls scored four-straight to go up 14-10 but Cincinnati cut it to one point at 17-16
> A 5-1 Temple run then gave the Owls a 22-17 advantage.
> The teams trades sideouts before Deak and Westfield ended the set with a block.

SET ONE: Temple 25, Cincinnati 18
> Cincinnati had a very early 3-1 edge in the second.
> The Owls then used a pair of 4-0 runs to go up 13-7.
> Cincinnati used a late 5-1 run to cut the Temple lead to three.
> Leading 21-17, Temple closed out the set with a 4-1 surge to go up, 2-0.

SET ONE: Cincinnati 25, Temple 19
> Cincinnati took control of the third set with four unanswered points to go up 7-4.
> The Bearcats' lead stretched to as many as five points.
> Trailing 15-10, the Owls tied things up with a 6-1 run with Heirakuji on the line.
> Cincinnati answered with a 7-1 run, and closed out the 25-19 win.

SET ONE: Temple 25, Cincinnati 18
> The Bearcats had an early advantage, going up 8-6.
> Coundourides' serving run keyed a momentum shift, as the Owls opened up a 15-8 advantage.
> Cincinnati got the lead back under six just twice more in the set, but Temple finished off the Bearcats.
