Men's Basketball Opens Big 5 Play on Sunday at La Salle

11.24.17 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Looking to extend its undefeated start to the season, Temple men's basketball will open its Philadelphia Big 5 slate at La Salle (3-3) on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 5 p.m. (NBC Sports Network / 1210 AM WPHT). The Owls (3-0), whose first six games of the season are away from home, will play their first three city-series games in a span of 17 days.

Scouting the Owls
> Temple is 3-0 to start the season and won the team title at the 2017 Gildan Charleston Classic last week. It was the first Charleston Classic win for the Owls in three appearances, and they now stand at 7-2 all-time in the tournament.
> The Owls' 3-0 start marks the first time in program history that they've started the season with three straight wins away from home. In all, Temple will play six road games before its home opener vs. Wisconsin on Dec. 6.
> Temple's last 3-0 start to any season was in 2012-13 when the Owls went 6-0 to start and 24-10 overall.
> Senior forward Obi Enechionyia was named the Charleston Classic MVP, and also named to the American Conference Weekly Honor Roll. Sophomore guard Quinton Rose joined Enechionyia on the Charleston Classic All-Tournament Team.
> Enechionyia has 998 career points, needing just two more to become the 52nd player in program history to reach 1,000 points.
> After leading the American Athletic Conference with 9.0 three-pointers per game in 2016-17, Temple has already hit 10 three-pointers in each of its first three games this year.
> Five players scored in double figures in Temple's championship game, 67-60 win vs. Clemson. Leading the way was junior guard Shizz Alston, Jr. with 14 points, while Rose notched his first-ever double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Josh Brown scored 13 points (3-of-4 3-pointers), sophomore guard Alani Moore II came off the bench for 12 points and Enechionyia also scored 12 points.
> Behind a 56-point second half that saw their best shooting in almost three years (67.9 percent), the Owls toppled Auburn in their second game in Charleston. Enechionyia led four players who scored in double figures, recording his fourth career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
> Alston has hit a perfect 14-of-14 free throws so far this season, and has now made 42 free throws in a row dating back to Dec. 28, 2016. His streak is the second-longest in program history behind Lynn Greer's 49 consecutive free throws.

Scouting the Explorers
> La Salle is 3-3 to start the season, going 3-0 before falling in its last three straight games. Most recently, the Explorers lost 57-46 to #11/11 Miami (FL) on Nov. 22.
> The Big 5 slate started early for La Salle, who defeated Penn 75-71 in double overtime on Nov. 13.
> La Salle finished an even 15-15 last year, also going .500 in the Atlantic 10 with a record of 9-9. The Explorers have not won more than 17 games in a season since going 24-10 and advancing to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2012-13.
> Redshirt senior guard B.J. Johnson, a 2016-17 Philadelphia Big 5 First Team selection, leads La Salle with 21.7 points per game and 10.7 rebounds per game.

All-Time Series
> Temple and La Salle are meeting for the 118th time, with the Owls holding a strong, 76-41 advantage in the series.
> The Owls have won three straight, including a 97-92 overtime decision at home in last year's meeting (11/11/16).
> In the 2013-14 season, La Salle got its only win in the past 12 meetings. The Explorers earned a 74-68 victory on Jan. 18, 2014 to break an eight-game losing streak against Temple.
> In 2012-13, Temple won 82-74 at home against a La Salle team that finished the year in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
> The Owls have won 19 of the last 23 meetings, including eight straight from 2010-2013.
> This year's meeting is just the second to not be played at the Palestra since the 2012-13 season.
> Temple head coach Fran Dunphy, a 1970 La Salle grad, is 28-7 against his alma mater (15-3 while at Temple).
