Volleyball Sweeps Campbell to Open NIVC Play

MORGANTOWN, W.V. -- The Temple volleyball team opened their first postseason tournament in 15 years with a convincing 3-0 sweep over Campbell in the first round of the 2017 National Invitational Volleyball Championship. The Owls earned the sweep with set scores of 25-18, 25-9, and 25-16 at the WVU Coliseum. Temple improved to 20-9 overall with the win, the Owls' fourth-straight 20-win season. Campbell finishes its 2017 campaign at 20-12.
KEYS TO THE MATCH
> Temple hit .316, including a .423 clip in the second set.
> The Owls out-blocked the Camels, 13-2, with Temple racking up a season-best eight stuffs in the second frame.
> Temple held Campbell to a negative team attack, as the Camels managed just a -.044 offense.
INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
> Junior Iva Deak finished her night with 10 kills with no errors, hitting .667, while adding four blocks.
> Freshman Katerina Papazoglou notched sevn kills, hitting .357.
> Senior Izzy Rapacz racked up seven kills with five blocks.
> Redshirt freshman Dana Westfield had six kills and three blocks.
> Senior Janine Simmons finished with five kills, no errors, adding a team-best six blocks.
> Senior Kyra Coundourides dished out 30 assists and added seven digs.
> Junior Mia Heirakuji led the defense with 13 digs.
SET ONE: Temple 25, Campbell 18
> Temple jumped out to a 5-0 lead, which later ballooned to 13-4.
> Campbell responded with a 6-0 run to cut the advantage to 13-10.
> The Owls regrouped out of a timeout and used a 6-2 surge to regain their cushion, 19-12.
> Campbell got as close as 21-17, but the Owls finished out set one with a 4-1 run, including a Salvador ace to win it.
SET TWO: Temple 25, Campbell 9
> Temple broke a 3-3 tie with a 7-1 run to take 10-4 lead.
> Campbell scored three straight to make it 10-7, before Temple took control.
> A 10-1 run Owls run, backed by strong blocking from Simmons and Rapacz gave the Owls a 20-8 lead.
> Campbell got no closer, as the Owls had three blocks in the final five points to go up, 2-0.
SET THREE: Temple 25, Campbell 16
> Temple opened the third frame with a 5-0 advantage.
> Campbell rallied to cut the Owls' lead to 15-13 with a 5-1 surge.
> Temple created some breathing room with a 4-0 run to go up 19-13.
> The Camels got as close as 20-16, but Temple finished out the sweep with a kill from junior Carla Guennewig.
