Men's Basketball Begins Two-Game Road Swing at Memphis

2.10.17 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - The start of a two-game road swing will take Temple men's basketball to The Volunteer State as the Owls get set to play at Memphis (18-7, 8-4) on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. Eastern (CBSSN / 1210 AM WPHT). The meeting is a rematch from just a few weeks ago when Temple (13-12, 4-8) beat the Tigers 77-66 at home on Jan. 25.

Temple had won back-to-back games before falling 66-50 to #25/RV SMU on Feb. 9. The Owls, who scored just 18 first-half points, later cut a 15-point deficit down to six but could come no closer.

Four different players have led Temple in scoring in the last four games. Sophomore Shizz Alston, Jr. was the most recent of those leaders with 13 points vs. SMU, and has led or tied for the team lead the most times this season (10 games). Senior Daniel Dingle tied his career high with 22 points in the Owls' recent win vs. USF (2/5), hitting a career-best 6-of-7 three-pointers. Dingle has now reached double figures in scoring in 13 of the last 15 games.

The Owls started 1-6 in league play before winning three of four, starting with their win over Memphis. With a game-high 22 points in that contest, Alston hit the 20-point mark for a third game in a row and became the Owls' leading scorer, now with 14.0 ppg (ninth in the conference).

Memphis is coming off a 66-44 win vs. Tulsa on Feb. 7. The Tigers went 5-1 to start their American Athletic Conference schedule, but have since gone 3-2 starting with the loss at Temple.

Sophomore guard Dedric Lawson is averaging a double-double of 19.5 ppg and 10.1 rpg to lead Memphis. His scoring average ranks second in the conference, while his rebounding average leads all players in the league. Lawson is currently the only player in the country to rank inside of his conference's top 10 in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocked shots.

Tubby Smith is in his first year at the helm for Memphis. The three-time National Coach of the Year has an overall record of 575-283 as head coach at Memphis, Texas Tech, Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, and Minnesota.

Temple and Memphis are meeting for the 18th time and for the eighth time in the last 15 years. The Owls hold a slight edge in the series, 9-8 after their win on Jan. 25. The teams split games in the regular season last year with the Tigers edging Temple in a nail-biter, 67-65 in Memphis on Jan. 13, but the Owls rebounding for a 72-62 Senior Night win at Temple on March 3.

Two years ago, the teams met in the 2015 American Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals on March 13, with Temple winning 80-75 to advance. The win was the 500th career victory for head coach Fran Dunphy.
