Men's Basketball Beats Memphis 74-62 to Sweep Season Series

2.12.17 | Men's Basketball

MEMPHIS - With a huge run to close the first half, Temple men's basketball had enough cushion to hold off Memphis in the second and sweep the season series against the Tigers (18-8, 8-5), winning 74-62 at FedEx Forum. In his first career start, freshman Quinton Rose led the Owls (14-12, 5-8) with 18 points including 13 in the second half.

Temple's run was 25-2 over the last 11:43 of the opening period, and extended to 28-2 with the first bucket of the second half. The Owls' largest lead of the game was 19 points with 13 minutes left, but Memphis cut the advantage to as few as three points near the six-minute mark.

With three treys over the final 4:54 and 6-of-8 free throws made in that same span, the Owls were able to pull away in the closing minutes for their second road win of the American Athletic Conference slate.

Rose, who finished 4-of-5 from long range, led four players in double figures for Temple. Shizz Alston, Jr. and Daniel Dingle scored 13 points apiece, while Obi Enechionyia finished with 10. Dingle tied his career high with a game-high seven assists.

Temple won the battle of the boards, 39-32, getting six or more rebounds from four players including a career-high eight from freshman Damion Moore in his second career start and a season-high seven from Mark Williams.

Memphis had the hot hand early, shooting close to 60 percent over the first 10 minutes and leading by as many as nine points with 11:43 left in the period, 23-14. The contest then took an abrupt shift, with the Tigers scoring just two more points the rest of the way.

The Owls started their huge closing run with seven straight points before allowing one final Memphis bucket by Dedric Lawson at 8:42. From there, it was all Temple the rest of the way as the Owls scored 18 unanswered points to lead 39-25 at the break.

Alston scored 10 points in the 25-2 run and finished the half with 13 points to lead all scorers, including 3-of-5 three-pointers. The Owls shot 56.7 percent from the field while Memphis was down to just 37 percent by halftime.

After Enechionyia hit a trey to open the second-half scoring, Memphis scored its first bucket in 10 minutes at 17:47. The Owls' largest lead of 19, 53-34, came on a Rose three-pointer at the 13-minute mark.

Starting at 11:07, Memphis cut a 17-point Temple lead down to six with an 11-0 run. Dedric Lawson (27 points) scored five in a row for the Tigers to make it a three-point game with 6:19 remaining.

Williams put the advantage back at five points with two free throws, and Rose drained his third of four three-pointers at 4:54 to start the Owls' solid closing run.

Temple will be on the road again for its next game, a 7 p.m. contest at East Carolina on Wednesday, Feb. 15 (ESPNews / 1210 AM WPHT).
