Men's Basketball Celebrates Hooter the Owl's Birthday on Sunday vs. USF

2.2.17 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - The birthday celebration of Hooter the Owl has always been a good omen for Temple men's basketball, as the team is 11-0 all-time when celebrating their mascot's special day. The Owls (12-11, 3-7) will look to make it 12 straight when they host USF (6-14, 0-9) on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. (CSN / 1210 AM WPHT).

In addition to the birthday celebrations, which include mascots from all around the area being in attendance, the team will host an autograph session for fans after the game.

Temple is coming off its first road win of the conference season, holding off Tulane for a 79-71 victory on Jan. 31. Four players reached double figures in scoring, led by freshman Quinton Rose with 18 points and a career-high nine rebounds.

The Owls started 1-6 in league play but have now won two of their last three, including a 77-66 home win over Memphis on Jan. 25. With a game-high 22 points vs. Memphis, sophomore Shizz Alston, Jr. hit the 20-point mark for a third game in a row and became the Owls' leading scorer this season, now with 14.0 ppg (10th in the conference).

USF has lost 10 in a row since beginning conference play, most recently falling 85-75 to Memphis on Feb. 2. USF has been plagued by drama this season, and the Bulls have played just seven games under interim head coach Murry Bartow after Orlando Antigua was fired in early January. Sophomore point guard Jahmal McMurray, after being suspended for the first six games of the season, led the Bulls with 20.3 ppg over three contests before abruptly transferring from the program in late December.

Geno Thorpe is now the scoring leader for USF with 13.4 ppg and ranks fifth in the conference with 4.4 assists per game.

Temple and USF have met eight times, with the Owls leading 6-2 in the all-time series. The?Owls have won six in a row including three last season. After a regular season sweep with a 70-63 win on January 31 at USF and a 77-65 win at home on Feb. 14, the Owls also won in the American Quarterfinals on March 11 by a score of 79-62.
