Lacrosse Battles City Rival Saint Joseph's on Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA - Longtime city and former conference rival Saint Joseph's awaits Temple lacrosse on Wednesday, Feb. 22, as the Owls head across town to face the Hawks at 3 p.m. Temple (2-1) leads the all-time series 17-2 and has won seven straight games against SJU (1-0).

» Temple opened its season with back-to-back thrilling wins by two goals apiece before suffering a setback at #13 Princeton. The Owls came from three goals down with five minutes left in their most recent win over Monmouth on Feb. 15, getting the game-winning goal from senior Brenda McDermott with 12 seconds left before adding an insurance goal by senior Anna Frederick with three seconds to go.
» Four players notched hat tricks in the 18-16 Monmouth win, led by sophomore Amber Lambeth who tied her career goal, set one game earlier, with four goals. Frederick, senior Carly Demato and junior Nicole Barretta all scored three goals apiece.

The Saint Joseph's Hawks have played just one game so far this season, defeating visiting American University by a score of 15-7 on Feb. 18. Nora McCallion scored five goals to lead the Hawks and tallied a career-high eight total points by also recording three assists. In her SJU debut, graduate student goalkeeper Liz O'Sullivan made 10 saves as the Hawks held the Eagles scoreless in the second half. Head coach Alex Kahoe is in her third year at the helm, and brought back nine starters from 2016 including Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Rebecca Lane, A-10 First Team attacker McCallion, and IWLCA Second Team and A-10 First Team midfielder Maggie Egan.Â

Temple holds a commanding lead of 17-2 in the all-time series against city and former conference rival Saint Jospeh's, and the Owls have won seven straight games dating back to 2009. Last year, Temple won 16-4 at home on March 12, and the Owls edged the Hawks 12-11 in overtime at Saint Joseph's the year before. The last time SJU won a game against Temple was back in 2009 when the teams were conference opponents in the Atlantic 10.Â

Senior Morgan Glassford led the BIG EAST in draw controls last season, ranking 18th in NCAA Division I with 4.11 draws per game, and she shows no signs of slowing down so far in the 2017 season. Glassford racked up a career-high 11 draw controls in the Owls' 18-16 win vs. Monmouth on Feb. 15, including three crucial draws that helped Temple come back from a three-goal deficit with five minutes remaining.Â
Glassford has recorded 119 draws in her career, already ranking fourth all-time at Temple with nearly a full season left to play. She needs 15 more draw controls to tie for third on the all-time list, and 37 to tie for first. So far in 2017, Glassford ranks 15th in the nation with 6.0 draw controls per game.
