Gymnastics Sets Season-Best Bar Score at Pink Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – Making just a short trip down Broad Street, the Owls posted one of their best showings of the season with a 193.90 at the Pink Invitational. Overall, Temple placed second behind the Maryland Terrapins who posted a 195.225. West Chester took third with a 193.60 and Southern Connecticut State placed fourth with a 191.275.
Kicking things off on floor, the Owls opened up the meet with a 48.5 on floor. Freshman Jaylene Everett posted her best performance to date with a 9.8 in the lead off position. Junior Alexa Phillip was close behind with a solid 9.75 followed by a pair of 9.7 marks from Briana Odom and Reagan Oliveri. Sahara Gipson's 9.55 and Daisy Todd's 9.5 rounded out the scores for the first event.
The consistency remained as the Owls posted a second 48.5 on vault in the second rotation. Odom and Gipson each grabbed marks of 9.75 and were closely followed by beautiful 9.7-earning performances from Everett and Todd. Gipson and Odom's scores stood in a tie for second overall. Mahgoub's solid 9.6 rounded out the counting scores for the Owls.
The Owls picked up huge momentum on bars with a season-high 48.725 on bars. The lineup was headed by Phillip's career-high 9.875 and a 9.825 from Todd. The pair took first and second place overall among all bar competitors, respectively. Phillip's score also stands as just the third 9.875 on bars in Temple gymnastics history and first since 2004. After a tough miss on vault, Yasmin Eubanks was able to rally back and post a 9.7 for her routine, standing as her second-best season performance. Oliveri added a 9.675 and a pair of 9.65 marks from Breahna Wiczkowski and Kerry Arone finished up the top-scoring lineup.
Beam closed things out for Temple on Friday night with an event total of 48.175. Wiczkowski posted a strong mark of 9.8 in the anchor spot to lead the Owls and take third among all beam competitors. Freshman specialist Whitney King added a 9.775 followed closely by Reagan Oliveri's 9.75. Scores of 9.425 from both Todd and Gipson finished up the scoring for beam.
In the all-around, Todd posted a 38.45 and placed third behind Maryland's Kirsten Peterman and West Chester's Majesta Valentine.
The Owls return to competition on Wednesday, March 1 for a five-team meet in College Park, Md. The Terps play host to the Owls as well as West Chester, New Hampshire, and William & Mary. The meet is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on BTN To Go.
