Women's Basketball Thumps Tulane on the Road

2.5.17 | Women's Basketball

NEW ORLEANS -- Junior Donnaizha Fountain had a career day and Temple's defense shined in the final three quarters as the Temple women's basketball team picked up a lopsided 76-50 victory over Tulane on the road on Sunday. The Owls improve to 17-5 overall, 7-2 in conference play, while Tulane falls to 15-8 overall, 6-4 in The American.

Fountain finished her afternoon with 26 points, eight rebounds, and seven steals, hitting career-highs in points and steals. Meanwhile, the Temple defense, after allowing 26 first-quarter points, held Tulane to just 24 between the final three quarters, including only three in the third.

Junior Tanaya Atkinson notched her second-straight double-double, finishing with 20 points and 10 boards, while classmate Alliya Butts had 21 points and four assists. Elsewhere, senior Ruth Sherrill had six points and six rebounds and senior Feyonda Fitzgerald dished out a game-best five assists.

Tulane jumped out to a 10-5 lead, before an 8-2 Temple run gave the Owls their first advantage of the frame. The lead changed hands for more times before Tulane closed the quarter of a 4-1 surge to lead 26-25 after one.

Temple opened the second half with a 16-2 run, forcing four Tulane turnovers. Butts connected for six points during the surge, as the Owls took a 41-28 lead on a Deja Reynolds free throw. Tulane rallied to close the half with a 5-3 edge, but Temple led 44-33 at the break.

Fountain tallied 24 points in the first half, while Atkinson had 11 points and eight rebounds. Butts had six points and six assists, as Temple out-shot Tulane 44.1% to 40.7% in the first 20 minutes. The Owls also held a slim 20-18 edge on the glass and forced 10 Tulane turnovers. Kolby Morgan led the Green Wave with 11 points, while Leslie Vorpahl had nine at the half.

A 17-2 run started the third quarter for the Owls, as Temple extended its lead to 61-35. The run was briefly interrupted by a Tulane free throw, but the Owls finished the quarter with a 68-36 lead. Tulane scored just three points in the third, the best defensive quarter for Temple this season.

The Owls went up by 36 early in the fourth quarter, and led 74-41 on an Atkinson bucket before Temple emptied its bench. Tulane closed out the game on a 9-2 run, but Temple grabbed the lopsided 76-50 victory.

Temple returns to action on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. hosting Tulsa in a "School Day" game at the Liacouras Center.
