2.6.17 | Women's Basketball, Feyonda Fitzgerald - All-America Candidate
PHILADELPHIA -- Temple women's basketball senior Feyonda Fitzgerald was named one of 10 finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Award, giving to the nation's top collegiate point guard by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.Â
Candidates for the Nancy Lieberman Award exhibit the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills of Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman. The list will be narrowed down to five finalists in mid-March and the winner will be announced during the WBCA's Keynote Session in Dallas, Texas at the Women's Final Four.
Fitzgerald is in the midst of her best season yet in cherry and white. She averages 16.6 points and 7.4 assists per game, with her assist number ranking eighth in the nation. Fitzgerald continues to improve her already school record for career assists (565 so far), is now tied for third all-time on Temple's all-time scoring list with 1,636 points.
The guard has helped lead Temple to a 17-5 overall record, including 7-2 in American Athletic Conference play. The Owls are receiving votes in both national polls and are now number 23 in the NCAA Rating Percentage Index (RPI).Â
"Nancy Lieberman was a true trailblazer of the game, paving the way for countless female athletes who aspired to follow in her footsteps," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "She was the quintessential point guard and the student-athletes named to our list of finalists exhibit many of her fine qualities as a player and person."
