2017 Football Schedule Released
2.9.17 | Football
PHILADELPHIA – Four nationally-televised games and visits from the past two American Athletic Conference West Division champions, Houston and Navy, highlight Temple's 2017 football schedule, announced today by the league office.
First-year head coach Geoff Collins and the reigning American Athletic Conference Champions will play no less than four games on national television. Three of the Owls' road games – the season opener at Notre Dame (NBC), USF (ESPN) and Cincinnati (ESPN2) - and the Navy home game (ESPN or ESPN2) will be played in front of a national audience. Start times for all games will be announced at a later date.
"What a great time to be an Owl," said Collins. "Whether on the road and on national television, or at Lincoln Financial Field against some of the best in college football, Temple is now recognized as a Top 25 program. People will watch us play and see championship football every play – from snap to whistle."
Temple's schedule includes an even slate of six home and six road games. The bye week will take place the last week of October, after playing eight straight games.
With three out of six road games on national television, season ticket holders will have a chance to see nearly all of the 2017 Owls' games. Two non-conference games start off the home schedule – Villanova and UMass – before defense of The American title begins. Conference Championship Game foes Houston and Navy, 2015 and 2016 respectively, come to Lincoln Financial Field, along with UConn and UCF.
For the third straight year, the American Athletic Conference will hold a playoff game to crown a Conference Champion. Temple is one of 13 FBS schools to win 10-or-more games in each of the past two seasons and one of five (Alabama, Clemson, San Diego State, Western Kentucky) to accomplish that feat while also playing in its Conference Championship game in each season.
The Owls are coming off back-to-back 10-win seasons and captured the 2016 American Athletic Conference title with a 34-10 win over Navy on Dec. 3. Last season's defense ranked third nationally in yards per game (282.5), third in pass defense (152.1), 11th in scoring defense (18.4), 19th in sacks (37), 21st in third down defense (34.7) and 25th in rushing defense (130.1). The offense set the school record with 5,790 yards of total offense and 453 points.
