Men's Basketball Falls 66-50 to #25 SMU
2.9.17 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - No. 25 SMU's Semi Ojeleye's double-double of 30 points and 10 rebounds led the Mustangs to a 66-50 win over Temple (13-12, 4-8) in a late game at the Liacouras Center. SMU (21-4, 11-1) got 10 more points at the free throw line, with Ojeleye going 10-for-11 from the stripe.
Temple cut a 15-point second-half deficit down to six points near the eight-minute mark, but could come no closer down the stretch as SMU closed out the game on a 15-5 run. The Owls had two players with four fouls, and were whistled for 20 fouls overall compared to 11 for SMU. Temple went just 8-of-13 at the line while the Mustangs were 18-for-25.
Sophomore Shizz Alston, Jr. led the Owls with 13 points, three assists and three steals. Freshman Quinton Rose came off the bench for 12 points, and senior Daniel Dingle added 10. Junior Obi Enechionyia grabbed a team-best 11 rebounds but fell short of the double-double with eight points.
Ojeleye went 8-of-16 from the field and 4-of-8 from long range in scoring nearly half of SMU's total points.
The first half was a sloppy one for both teams with a combined 20 turnovers and neither team shooting over 32 percent. Temple was on the worse end of both of those stats, committing 11 turnovers and making just 24 percent of its shots from the field.
The Owls took a 14-12 lead on a Rose dunk just past the 11-minute mark, but scored only a single field goal the rest of the way. SMU used a 16-1 run to take a 28-15 lead with two minutes left in the half, getting 10 of those points from Ojeleye.
Temple cut the margin to 10 points by halftime with another three points from Rose, and trailed 28-18 at the break.
The Owls made some runs in the second half to give themselves a chance, but were ultimately unable to get the stops they needed to complete any comeback attempts.
After SMU took a 14-point lead early in the second half, Dingle knocked down a pair of three-pointers to keep the deficit manageable. The Mustangs took their largest lead of 15 points, 41-26 at 16:21, but Temple responded with a 6-0 run capped by a dunk and layup from Rose.
The Owls matched that nine-point margin twice more before Alston's third trey of the contest was followed by an Enechionyia jumper to make it a six-point game, 49-43 with 9:29 remaining. Mike Robbins hit both ends of a 1 and 1 at 7:54 to again bring the Owls within six, but it was as close as they would get.
SMU used a 7-0 run from 4:56 to 1:09 to put its lead back at 12 and seal the win.
Temple will play its next two games on the road, starting with a 2 p.m. (ET) contest at Memphis on Sunday, Feb. 12 (CBSSN / 1210 AM WPHT).
