Women's Gymnastics Sets Two Program Records at Maryland

3.1.17 | Women's Gymnastics

COLLEGE PARK, MD. – Topping their own school record once again, Temple women's gymnastics continued its historic season with an impressive 194.90 at Maryland's five team meet Wednesday night. En route to the new program record, the Owls also topped their own vault record and set season-high floor and bar marks.

Overall, the score placed the Owls third behind the hosting Terrapins (195.80) and the University of New Hampshire (195.275). Temple picked up two wins in the big meet with defeats of West Chester (193.225) and William & Mary (191.05).

The Owls evening kicked off on beam with top marks of 9.75 and 9.725 from Sahara Gipson and Whitney King, respectively. Reagan Oliveri continued her consistency in the leadoff spot with a 9.675 and was book-ended by Breahna Wiczkowski's 9.55 in the anchor spot. A 9.375 from Alexa Phillip capped off the counting scores for beam and gave the Owls a 48.075 after the first rotation.

Picking up huge momentum in the second rotation, the Owls posted a season-high 48.9 on floor led by Briana Odom's career-high tying 9.85. Odom's score placed her in a seven-way tie for the event title and was preceded by a 9.8 from Alexa Phillip. The remainder of Temple's floor lineup that included Jaylene Everett, Daisy Todd, Oliveri and Gipson all posted scores of 9.75. The mark was a new season high from Todd.

Taking their high energy into vault, a string of stuck vaults and clean landings helped the Owls break their own program record on the event with an impressive 49.125 that topped all four competitors on the event for the day. The lineup was led by Gipson's 9.875 that not only led the entire pool of vault competitors, but also stands as the first ever score of 9.875 in Temple gymnastics history. The mark is just a quarter tenth shy of the all-time individual vault record of 9.9 that was set in 1996 by Adrienne Carver.

The record-setting lineup also included a season-high 9.85 from Todd and a 9.825 from Aya Mahgoub. That duo, along with Gipson, swept the top three spots of all vaulters for the day. The Owls also added a 9.8 from Odom, 9.775 from Everett, and 9.65 from Yasmin Eubanks.

Closing out the meet on bars, Phillip led the way for the Owls with a 9.825 that tied for third overall among all bar workers. Todd added a 9.775 with Wiczkowski and Eubanks adding marks of 9.725. Oliveri rounded out the counting scores with a season-high matching 9.75. Kerry Arone held strong with her bar work with a 9.7. Overall, the Owls event mark of 48.8 set the third season-high of the afternoon.

In a competitive pool of individual all-around workers, Todd two season-highs led her to a 38.475 that placed seventh overall.

The Owls will have a short break before returning to action on the road at Cornell on Saturday. The dual meet is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
