Ibrahim and Plunkett Head to NCAA Fencing Championships

3.23.17 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA - The NCAA Fencing Championships begin on Saturday, March 25 for the women, and Temple will have two student-athletes competing and representing the Owls. Junior Safa Ibrahim (epee) and freshman Kerry Plunkett (sabre) will fence against the best in the nation at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis, Ind.

Ibrahim and Plunkett are two of just 72 women's fencers to earn berths at the national meet. They did so based on a combination of their performance all season long and their performance at the recent NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional.

In Indianapolis, fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with the winners fencing to determine first and second places, and the non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place.

An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.

Ibrahim will be making her third straight appearance at the NCAA Championships. She's coming off an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional, and went 45-25 in dual meets this season. Ibrahim placed 16th at the national meet as a freshman and 17th as a sophomore.

Plunkett has qualified for the NCAA Championships in her debut season with the Owls. She advanced to the finals and placed 11th overall at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional, and went 69-23 overall in dual meets this season. Among many strong finishes over the course of her freshman year, Plunkett tied for third among 143 competitors in junior women's epee at the January North American Cup (NAC).

Last season, Temple had four fencers compete (of the maximum six per team), and finished 11th of 21 women's teams. The previous year, in 2015, Temple tied for 18th among women's programs. Temple took eighth place among women's teams at the 2014 NCAA Championships, which was the highest finish for the Owls since placing eighth in 2009.
