Three Golds Highlight Murphy Cup for Men's Crew

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple men's crew team took home four medals, including three golds, hosting the 35th Annual Murphy Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River on Saturday.
Temple, hosting its first regatta at its newly opened boathouse, grabbed wins in the third varsity eight, the novice eight, and the novice four, while taking third in the varsity four event. Overall, all of Temple's boats advanced to the finals, and no crew finished lower than fifth place overall in a stacked field.
In novice racing, the Owls swept the eight and four events. The novice eight opened the day with a win in its heat, clocking in at 6:24.44. In the finals, Temple cruised to a 13-second victory, recording a time of 6:00.85 to best St. Joseph's, Virginia, Colgate, and Rhode Island.
In the novice four events, Temple won its heat in 7:16.04, and then grabbed a gold medal with a time of 6:49.00 in the finals. The Owls topped Penn State, USMMA, Lafayette, North Carolina, and Washington College for the gold.
Temple's other win came in the third varsity event. The Owls opened the day with a 6:21.60 in the heats, and then won the final race in 5:58.16, topping Virginia, Bucknell, Drexel, St. Joseph's, and Bates.
The Owls also grabbed a medal in the varsity four race. Temple opened the day with a 7:16.17 in the heats, finishing third but advancing to the finals based on time. In the grand finals, Temple clocked in at 6:54.76 to nab bronze, ahead of La Salle, Virginia, and Wesleyan, finishing just behind Colgate and North Carolina.
Both of Temple's varsity eights had strong days, finishing fifth overall. The varsity eight won its opening heat in 5:55.01, nipping second-place Bates by just 0.02. In the finals, Temple clocked in at 5:54.90 to take fifth.
In second varsity eight racing, Temple opened the day with a second-place finish in the heats, with a time of 6:13.83. In the finals, the Owls nabbed fifth with a time of 5:56.51.
Temple returns to the water next Saturday, hosting on the Schuylkill River.
