Lacrosse Beats Marquette in OT on McDermott's Golden Goal

3.25.17 | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA - Senior Brenda McDermott scored the overtime game-winner for Temple lacrosse to lift the Owls (8-2, 1-1) to a 17-16 victory against visiting Marquette (3-7, 1-1) in their BIG EAST home opener. The high-scoring affair saw Temple tally three hat tricks, led by junior Nicole Barretta's five goals.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Kelsea Hershey recorded the win in the cage, making two of her six saves in the overtime period to allow Temple to have a chance to get back on offense. After the second of those saves, senior Krissy Gallivan scooped up a crucial ground ball, and McDermott soon drove to goal for the game-winner.

"I knew there were only 19 seconds left (on the shot clock), said McDermott. "I wanted to go to goal, so I just made myself get there."

Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen credited her senior leader with handling adversity throughout the game and staying composed.

"Brenda was marked tightly and face-guarded all day," said Rosen. "We know we can leave Brenda on the field in those situations and we can look to her to make things happen, but also be confident that we can wait around until she needs to things happen...it never fails that in big moments, Brenda steps up."

Both Barretta and McDermott totaled a team-best six points, with Barretta adding one assist to her career-high five goals, and McDermott adding three assists to her hat trick.

Freshman Olivia Thompson had a career game with four goals, while senior Anna Frederick recorded a career-tying four points by adding two assists to two goals. Also having a breakout game was freshman Meghan Hoffman with a career-high three assists.

Rounding out the goal-scorers were seniors Morgan Glassford and Carly Demato, tallying one apiece with Glassford adding two assists and a game-high eight draw controls.

After sitting out the Denver game due to injury, Glassford's return was a big one for the Owls, who notched 22 draws to Marquette's 13. Glassford now stands in second place all-time at Temple with 147 draw controls, needing just nine more to tie for first.

Temple took an early 2-0 lead, but soon found themselves down three after a 5-0 run for the Golden Eagles over an eight-minute stretch.

Trailing 5-2 with 19:48 left in the first half, the Owls quickly recovered from the final Marquette goal with Frederick scoring her second of the game just over a minute later on an assist from Glassford. That goal was followed by Frederick's third in the next minute, and both became part of a 7-0 run for Temple.

McDermott scored twice in the run, and the freshman connection of Thompson-Hoffman closed it out to give the Owls a 9-5 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half. Marquette got one back before another three-goal spurt for Temple gave the Owls their largest lead of the game, 12-6 with 6:19 to go before the break.

The Golden Eagles scored twice in the final five minutes of the period to make it just a 12-8 advantage for Temple at halftime, and they continued to press in the second half. Thompson scored unassisted just over a minute after the break, but Marquette then rattled off four straight to cut the deficit to one, 13-12 at 20:51.

Thompson's fourth and final goal at 20:11 gave the Owls a two-goal cushion, but Marquette went on to score three straight and take a 15-14 lead with 9:31 left.

Barretta came on strong with back-to-back goals, assisted by Hoffman and Frederick, to regain the lead for the Owls at 16-15 with 6:47 remaining. Over a back-and-forth and intense next few minutes, a yellow card on Temple eventually led to a man-up goal for the Golden Eagles with 2:44 remaining. Grace Gabriel notched the tying goal for her team, scoring her sixth goal of the contest.

Glassford picked up the final draw control of regulation and the Owls had three shots in the remaining time, but two went wide and a third by McDermott hit the crossbar. She got another chance in overtime and made it count to lift Temple to victory.

"We knew how important this game was," said Rosen. "We know that to be in the final four of our conference, you have to win. Ultimately there are so many variables to who will make it in the end with tiebreakers and goal-differentials, so we do talk about it but really the key is that we just focus on preparation all the time."

Temple will play its next game on the road, heading to Georgetown for a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday, April 1.
