Huge Closing Run Lifts Lacrosse to 12-5 Win over UMBC
3.4.17 | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA - With an 8-0 run to close out the game, Temple lacrosse won its fourth straight, defeating visiting UMBC (4-2) 12-5 on a very brisk afternoon at Howarth Field. The Owls (6-1) started the run down a goal with 20 minutes remaining, and already had a four-goal lead with 10 minutes left.
"All season long we've had moments where we're chasing," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen. "This was a game that felt like it was just a matter of taking control...fortunately we're getting a little comfortable with being down at times, and it was very clear that if we could just clean a few things up, we might be able to take control and win the game."
Senior Carly Demato notched a hat trick to lead Temple, scoring all three of her goals in the closing run. She also scored them all on free position opportunities, going 3-for-3 on the afternoon. Leading the Owls in total points was senior Brooke Williams with five, as she added one goal to a career-high four assists.
Scoring twice in the final run was senior Krissy Gallivan, while senior Morgan Glassford also scored two goals on the afternoon.
The first half was an unusual one in what has been a high-scoring season for Temple, with both teams scoring only twice. Over 10 minutes had passed in the game before junior Nicole Barretta got the Owls on the board with a free-position goal to give them a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Olivia Thompson passed to Glassford for Temple's only other goal of the first half, giving the Owls a 2-1 lead with 7:13 left. With just 1:37 to go before halftime, UMBC tied the game to make it a 2-2 score at the break.
After a first half that saw zero goals in the first 10 minutes, both offenses got going quickly in the second period. In just the first seven minutes, UMBC scored three times while Glassford and McDermott scored for Temple. The Retrievers' third goal of the half put them up 5-4 with 23:46 left, but the Owls would hold them scoreless the rest of the way.
Williams started the run on an Amber Lambeth assist with 20:36 remaining, tying the game for a fifth time at 5-5. Five minutes later, the score remained knotted, and Rosen called timeout.
"We'd been doing a really nice job, but we looked tired," said Rosen. "The point of the timeout was to actually get a breather...we just reminded them about the offense we were running and to defend hard. The little breather really helped them settle in and start to execute and I think they just looked at the field really well."
Coming out of the timeout, Williams found Gallivan for the game-winning sixth goal, and it remained all Temple from there. Demato converted on two of her free-position chances in a two-minute stretch for an 8-5 lead, and junior Kira Gensler made it 9-5 with 10 minutes left.
Gallivan, McDermott and Demato all scored in the final seven minutes to keep the game out of reach of UMBC, with the last two goals both coming at the 8-meter line.
Freshman goalkeeper Maryn Lowell improved to 4-0 for the season, playing the complete game and making five saves for the Owls. UMBC goalkeeper Ashley Peacock registered seven saves for the Retrievers.
Temple will have a full week off before its next game, as the Owls will host Bucknell in the final non-conference contest of the season at 1 p.m on Sunday, March 12.
