Lacrosse's Late Rally Thwarts Georgetown Comeback
4.1.17 | Women's Lacrosse
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Behind a career-tying 11 saves from Maryn Lowell and a three-goal, three-assist effort by Brenda McDermott, Temple lacrosse broke a late tie and won 11-9 at Georgetown (4-7, 2-1) in a key BIG EAST victory. The Owls (9-2, 2-1) led 9-5 before allowing the Hoyas to come all the way back, but Amber Lambeth and Anna Frederick both scored for Temple in the final minute and a half after the Owls came up with both draw controls.
"We're always prepared for the runs and for the emotions of those runs," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen. "We just reminded our team about the game plan, to keep working for our space and keeping shooting opportunities were could see the goal cage. We prepared really well for this game and for this type of game"
Lowell came up with many of her saves at key moments to keep Georgetown from ever taking a lead in the contest, and some of her saves were at point-blank range.
"Maryn had a spectacular day," said Rosen, "She's been working really hard in practice, as has Kelsea Hershey, and it was great to see how well she was seeing the ball today. Her early saves really helped us establish momentum. I was really proud of her performance and she really helped set the tone for the day."
Lambeth and Frederick both finished with two goals each, while four others also scored for Temple including freshman Kimmy Weinstock who netted her first career goal along with tallying three draw controls.
Other key contributors for the Owls were Morgan Glassford (five draw controls, three ground balls, one goal), Kara Nakrasius (five ground balls, first career assist on the game-winning goal) and Nicole Latgis (three caused turnovers).
Lowell made six of her saves in what proved to be a low-scoring first half, helping keep the Owls tied or in the lead the whole way. McDermott got Temple on the board in the second minute, but Georgetown tied it up less than 30 seconds later.
The early scoring continued with a Frederick goal at 27:44, but it would be the final goal for either team in the opening 10 minutes. At 19:12 of the first half, Glassford made it a 3-1 lead for the Owls on a McDermott assist.
Lowell made two saves in a five-minute stretch before the Hoyas cut the Owls' lead to one at 14:43, and Georgetown tied it up two minutes later at 12:47.
Each team had an apparent goal recalled due to fouls, and the only goal for the rest of the half was McDermott's second of the game with 2:43 left before the break. That goal made it 4-3 Temple, which stood through halftime.
After Georgetown tied it yet again, 4-4 just over three minutes into the second half, Temple used a 3-0 run to take a 7-4 lead after less than seven minutes of action. The first goal of the run was the first career score for Weinstock. The other two both involved McDermott as she passed to Nicole Barretta for one and scored the other on a free-position opportunity.
After another Georgetown goal by Whitehurst, Temple got goals from Lambeth and Olivia Thompson to make it a 9-5 lead with 20 minutes left.
Over a 14-minute stretch starting at 17:32, the Hoyas came all the way back, using a 4-0 run to tie the game at 9-9 with 3:31 remaining. Lowell had some huge saves near the end of that run, with Weinstock also controlling a key draw after Georgetown's eighth goal, but the Owls ultimately lost their lead.
Glassford came up with the draw after the final tie, and Lowell made her 11th and final save after a Temple turnover gave Georgetown another chance. After a yellow card on the Hoyas, Lambeth scored the game-winner on a Nakrasius assist with 1:12 remaining, and Frederick added an insurance with 29 seconds left.
"We're still learning so much about those in-game situations," said Rosen. "We talked about expecting that its going to be hard, when you're trying to run out the clock, and if you see an opportunity, to take it. Anna's goal came out of playing in the moment and not trying to do too much. I'm just really proud and excited about the character of this team, that when we're in these big-pressure moments, we find a way to win."
Temple will be on the road again in its next game, a 3 p.m. contest at BIG EAST foe Cincinnati on Wednesday, April 5.
