Lacrosse Surges Past Butler, 19-7, for Fifth Straight Win
4.12.17 | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA - Matching its highest goal total in over a year, Temple lacrosse cruised past Butler by a score of 19-7 for its fifth straight win. The Owls (12-2, 5-1), who got hat tricks from Carly Demato, Kira Gensler and Brenda McDermott, are a perfect 7-0 at home this season.
Butler (1-13, 0-6), a brand new program in 2017, got two goals apiece from Haley Hallenbeck and Journey Fischbeck as well as 12 total saves from its two goalkeepers.
The hat trick for Demato, who scored a game-high four goals, was her second straight. McDermott, who scored three goals, has now recorded a hat trick in five straight games for the Owls.Â
Gensler also tallied three goals for the first hat trick of her career, and Morgan Glassford led Temple with three assists. In all, 11 players scored for Temple including four for whom it was the first of the season or career. Toni Yuko scored her first two goals of the season, and freshman Abby Overman recorded the first two assists of her career.
Freshmen Maddie Gebert and Michelle Koscinski each notched their first career goals, while sophomore Quinn Benintende scored her first of the year. Also scoring a goal each for Temple were Anna Frederick, Olivia Thompson and Nicole Barretta.
The Owls played every single able-bodied person on their roster, with many getting the most playing time they've had so far this season.
"Every day we practice, day in and day out, and we know what we have on our team but no one else gets to see it," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen. "Today was a wonderful day for me as a coach to get a chance to be able to provide that playing opportunity for so many. We only get 12 people on the field at a time so it's hard to provide that. To see them all on the field and get a chance to experience the game today, and to execute really well, was a thrill."
The early going saw a much closer game than the final score would suggest. Temple went up 2-1 after seven minutes, but the Owls did not score a third goal until 14:46 remained in the first half. That third goal, Gensler's first of the contest, was the second in a 7-0 run for the Owls that was capped by a Demato goal for an 8-1 lead with eight minutes to go in the opening half.
Butler scored twice in the final six minutes of the first period, but the Owls added three more goals to take an 11-3 lead into the break.
After the Bulldogs scored in the opening minutes of the second half, Temple rattled off four straight goals in a five-minute span for a 15-4 advantage. The final goal in that run came on a pass from freshman Meghan Hoffman to Thompson, as Hoffman tallied her sixth assist of the year.
Butler made its only run starting with 20 minutes left, scoring three straight to cut the Owls' lead to eight goals, but Temple finished the game with four unanswered goals including both of Yuko's. Overman assisted on the first and last goals of that 4-0 run, passing to Benintende with 3:11 left for the final goal of the game.
Temple finished with a 37-16 advantage in total shots, a 19-11 advantage in ground balls, and committed just eight turnovers to Butler's 20. The one weak spot for the Owls was on the draw, especially early in the game. Overall, the Bulldogs recorded 15 draws to Temple's 13. Nicole Latgis was key for the Owls in getting more draw controls later in the game, getting a team-high four draws overall.
Next up for the Owls is a road game at BIG EAST foe Vanderbilt on Saturday, April 15 at 2 p.m. (ET).
