Temple Student-Athletes Participate in National Girls and Women in Sports Day
4.19.17 | General, Outreach
PHILADELPHIA - On Tuesday afternoon, April 18, Temple student-athletes participated in National Girls & Women in Sports Day with children from area schools.
Local students in grades eight and below from the Philadelphia area came to Temple's Pavilion and Geasey Field where they participated in clinics with student-athletes from many of Temple's sports programs.
It was fifth straight year in which Temple Athletics has hosted such an event. Many of the local girls at this year's event came from nearby Duckrey Elementary School at 15th and Diamond Streets. Other students also came from William McKinley School and Spring Garden Academy. In addition to trying out various sports, participants and athletes danced along with the music of DJ DSquared throughout the afternoon.
The girls spent more than two hours rotating between 10 different stations that included representatives from nearly all of Temple's 19 varsity sports. This year marked the second year Temple's men's teams were present, giving kids the chance to experience golf and football, sports that Temple does not offer on the women's side.
The variety of sports is one of the highlights of the event for the participants, who generally have not had a chance to try the less mainstream activities.
Knowing the participants would be hungry after a long day at school and a couple hours of sports, the planning committee was committed to getting donations of healthy food and water. Before departing for the day, each girl was given a gift bag. The bag, donated by The Fresh Grocer of Progress Plaza, included water, granola bars, a "portion plate" with imprints to teach the kids how much of each food group is healthy during a meal, Under Armour headbands, a notebook, University information and a nutrition flyer put together by Temple Strength & Conditioning about healthy habits.
Temple Athletics would like to sincerely thank all of the following groups for donating time and/or items for the event:
Temple University Student-Athletes and Coaches
Temple University Athletic Training
