Golf in Seventh Place after First Round of Conference Championship

PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Temple men's golf turned in a solid first round at the 2017 American Athletic Conference Championship Sunday. The Owls' top three golfers, redshirt sophomore John Barone and sophomores Trey Wren and Gary McCabe, all carded 74s to help Temple place seventh in the nine-team field. The tournament is being held at Innisbrook Golf Resort's par-71, 7,125-yard Copperhead Course.
Temple, which turned in a 298 (+14), was seven-over with three holes remaining, but the Owls top four golfers were a plus-seven on holes seven thru nine to end the round. The Owls' top trio finished the day tied for 23rd in the 45-player field with redshirt freshman Erik Reisner (76) tying for 30th to round out the Cherry and White scorers. Sophomore Sam Soeth was two strokes behind Reisner and tied for 38th with a seven-over 78.
Houston's Papito Gonzalez leads the field with a three-under 68. He is one shot ahead of UCF's Manuel Elvira (69), the only other golfer with a sub-par round.
USF leads the tournament with a three-over 287. Houston is one stroke back (288) in second place followed by UCF (289), Cincinnati (291), Memphis (294), UConn (295), Temple, East Carolina (299) and SMU (300).
