Men's Soccer Honored at Philadelphia Soccer Six Banquet

4.6.17 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Soccer Six hosted its annual banquet on Thursday night to recognize and celebrate another successful 2017 season. Top players, coaches and teams were honored with Temple men's soccer grabbing several All-Star Team spots and individual awards. After earning two individual awards last year, and repeating as the Soccer Six goals and points leader this year, Jorge Gomez Sanchez was named the Chris Jones Player of the Year.

The top honor comes after another record-breaking year for the second-year Owl who topped off his career with an MLS Combine invitation and an MLS draft selection from the Vancouver Whitecaps. Within 2016 Soccer Six play, Gomez Sanchez was the goals and points leader with 14 and 31, respectively. For his efforts, Gomez Sanchez was also selected to the Soccer Six All-Star Team.

Joining him on the All-Star Team is Carlos Moros Gracia who was a member of the team last year, as well.

Joonas Jokinen added another major award for the Owls as he was named the John McAdams Academic Player of the Year. The junior sports and recreation management major ranked second on the team with 12 points in 2016 and was named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team in the fall. Jokinen became the first Temple men's soccer player to earn a spot on that team since 2014 and boasts a 3.9 cumulative GPA.

For the second year in a row, Alex Cagle finished up the season as the Soccer Six Goals Against Average Leader. The redshirt-junior posted a 0.82 GAA that allowed only 11 goals at home in an unbeaten home slate.

Newcomers Albert Moreno and Nick Sarver each earned spots on the Soccer Six All-Rookie Team. Moreno, an American Athletic Conference All-Rookie selection, held strong in the midfield for the Owls while posting two assists in his debut season. Sarver was a strong addition to an unstoppable Temple backline that led the Owls to a second-consecutive 10-win season.

Villanova was crowned the 2016 Philadelphia Soccer Six Champions with head coach Tom Carlin earning the Bill Harris Coach of the Year nod.
