Lacrosse Hosts Villanova Saturday in "Whiteout" and FOJ Game

4.7.17 | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA - Fans are encouraged to wear white to support Temple lacrosse as the Owls (10-2, 3-1) host Villanova (3-8, 1-3) on Saturday, April 8 at 1 p.m. Free t-shirts will be given away to students while supplies last. The team is also celebrating Friends of Jaclyn Day, and will have 11-year-old Lily Adkins as an honorary starter.

Seven years ago, in April of 2010, Temple lacrosse adopted its second "sister" through the Friends of Jaclyn (FOJ) Foundation. When Lily Adkins first met the team, she was a shy four-year-old and only three years removed from the discovery and treatment of an ependymoma brain tumor when she was 14 months old. These days, Lily is an active 11-year old who has been cancer-free for close to 10 years. Lily and her parents, Temple alums Trish and Mike, along with younger sister Chloe and younger brother Nicholas, attend the Owls' games when they can. Temple is celebrating Lily and honoring the FOJ Foundation on Saturday.

The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, formed in 2005, is a non-profit, charitable organization that improves the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors and their families. FOJ matches a child in need of love, support and friendship with a college or high school sports team based on geographic basis. Through a due diligence process, the foundation screens for the best match based on the child and family's needs and the team, coach and athletic director's commitment to the foundation's goals.

Temple is coming off three straight BIG EAST wins, and is tied for second in the conference with a record of 3-1. The Owls are tied with #3 Florida for the best overall record at 10-2. With their 10-2 record, the Owls are off to their best start to a season since 1997. That team ultimately finished 14-3 overall and advanced to the NCAA Semifinals.

Most recently, Temple came back from four goals down in an 11-9 win at Cincinnati on April 1. Senior Brenda McDermott scored three goals, all in a 6-0 closing run as the Owls completed the impressive comeback. Senior Carly Demato scored two goals, including the game-winning 10th goal, while senior Anna Frederick also scored twice and gave Temple an insurance goal with 49 seconds remaining. McDermott, who leads Temple with 25 goals, has now notched hat tricks with three goals in three straight games. Her 27 assists lead the team and rank 13th in NCAA Division I.

Freshman goalkeeper Maryn Lowell tied her career high with 11 saves in Temple's 11-9 win at Georgetown, and was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on April 4. Lowell followed that up with eight saves in the win at Cincinnati.

Two-time BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week already this season, senior Morgan Glassford, has a team-best 54 draw controls and ranks fourth in the league with 4.91 draws per game. Glassford has recorded 155 career draw controls to rank second all-time at Temple, needing just one more to tie for first.

Villanova has struggled so far this season, going just 3-8 overall and 1-3 in the BIG EAST. The Wildcats have lost their last two straight games, falling narrowly by a score of 14-13 vs. Georgetown on April 5, and losing 20-6 at Marquette on April 1. Freshman attacker Katie Comerford leads the team with 26 goals and 10 assists, while senior defender Sam Scarfogliero has been a leader on defense with team-bests of 38 ground balls and 26 draw controls. Scarfogliero leads the BIG EAST in both categories, while ranking in the top 20 nationally.

Temple and Villanova are meeting for the 11th time in program history, with the Owls holding a commanding, 9-1 lead in the series. Last year, the Owls won 10-7 at Villanova on April 20. The lone loss came in 2015 at home by a score of 9-7.
